The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities, delved into Canada's housing supply objectives and the associated challenges on the REAL TIME Podcasts. He highlighted the urgent need to close the supply gap, noting that approximately 5.8 million additional homes need to be constructed by 2030 to restore housing affordability and meet the growing demand. Fraser elaborated on the housing plan released in April, which outlines three pivotal strategies for increasing home construction: 1.Reducing Building Costs: Implementing measures to lower the expenses involved in constructing new homes, making housing more affordable for both builders and buyers. 2.Streamlining the Construction Process: Simplifying regulatory and procedural barriers to make it easier and faster to build new homes. 3.⁠ ⁠Adopting Innovative Building Strategies: Embracing new and effective methods and technologies in construction to improve efficiency and sustainability.

Labour has committed to 1.5 million new homes in the next five years - but how do we get there? Well, in simple terms (or perhaps not so simple), we need planning permissions to be delivered more quickly, more land released for homes, funding stability to attract investors, and new innovative schemes for first time buyers. "If we want to get society right and achieve the developmental goals that we've set for ourselves, we really need to get our cities right [and this involves the] deliberate pursuit of pro-poor, good, urban form".  The cities that will grow out of our high urbanisation rates haven't been built yet: that presents us with "an incredible opportunity for us to get the city right by building them better, and in this context, we're talking largely about affordable housing."
