An employee of Audi Museum casually referred to Michèle Mouton as 'that French lady who did rallying too.' This casual remark struck a chord with me and inspired me to share the story of this remarkable woman, whose achievements in the world of motorsport are nothing short of extraordinary. Michèle Mouton, a trailblazing figure in rally driving, is not just any 'French lady.' She is a woman who shattered glass ceilings in a sport dominated by men. Her journey in the world of rally began in 1973, and she quickly made a name for herself with her incredible skill and determination. In 1981, Mouton joined Audi and became the first woman to win a round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) at Rallye Sanremo, Italy. This victory was not just a win; it was a statement to the world about the capabilities and potential of women in motorsports. Her time with Audi was marked by her mastery of the Audi Quattro, a revolutionary car with over 300 horsepower and four-wheel drive. She showed the world that not only could a woman handle such a powerful machine, but she could also outperform her male counterparts. Mouton's legacy extends beyond her racing victories.
