The Canadian government has announced it will invest $120m to advance domestic semiconductor manufacturing and commercialisation capabilities. Announced by François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, Canada will finance $120m into a semiconductor project led by CMC Microsystems (CMC) worth over $220m. Funding will be provided via the Strategic Innovation Fund to create a pan-Canadian network of leading stakeholders from an array of fields. These stakeholders will help support semiconductor design, manufacturing and commercialisation, as well as develop cutting-edge sensor technology. Over the next five years, the FABrIC network aims to create nearly 325 highly skilled jobs and sustain around 440 positions throughout the project. This network will bolster domestic semiconductor production, enhancing North American competitiveness and supply chain resilience. FABrIC will not only support Canada’s economic growth but also foster national security and create quality middle-class jobs, ensuring a robust and resilient semiconductor supply chain across North America. The power semiconductor market is on the rise! With a strong growth momentum driven by demand in the new energy field, the market is benefiting from the continuous iteration of technology. MOSFET and IGBT are the main products in the market, but with an oversupply of production capacity and fierce competition in the industry, companies need to seek differentiated competitive strategies. As the industry clears inventories at the bottom of the cycle, this presents a great opportunity to seize the trough. However, while macroeconomic growth is lower than expected, risks must be carefully assessed. Innovation is key to driving the industry forward. With continuous iteration to promote its development, companies should increase investment in R&D. As the industry evolves, differentiation and innovation will be crucial to staying competitive.

Financing for Europe’s digital sovereignty: KfW IPEX-Bank is supporting research and development by Austrian semiconductor manufacturer AT&S with a loan amounting to EUR 45 million. The microelectronics specialist AT&S (Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik Aktiengesellschaft – Advanced Technologies & Solutions) is a leading global manufacturer of high-quality IC substrates and printed circuit boards as well as a developer of pioneering interconnect technologies for the chip industry. The loan from KfW IPEX-Bank will support the research and development of connecting materials for microchip production at AT&S' headquarters in Leoben (Styria, Austria). “We are proud we can contribute to Europe’s digital sovereignty through our financing,” says Dr Velibor Marjanovic, Member of the Management Board of KfW IPEX-Bank. “We are especially delighted that, with AT&S, we are supporting the only European manufacturer of high-end printed circuit boards and integrated circuit substrates, thereby helping to advance digitalisation and innovation in Europe.” "AT&S has been expanding for years. Our region boasts a strong tech sector, a skilled workforce, and the nanoFAB facility — a hub for semiconductor development and manufacturing.
