Buying Risk ______ When I was on the Founder side of the table, I was very focused on selling VCs the future I thought was possible. I was selling our vision, our team, our market opportunity, our product capabilities, and our traction. I was selling because that’s what capital raising is. It’s selling a future state to someone who might want to own part of it. I probably didn’t think enough about what the VCs were buying. Now that I am on the VC side of the table, it’s pretty clear that we buy one thing every time we write a check - risk. Risk isn’t bad, it's what every investor buys. When any investor buys anything, they are converting cash, which is mostly risk-free, into something with higher risk. Investors seek risk because they believe buying a certain type of risk will result in a certain return profile on their invested capital. VCs usually pass on investing in companies not because they see too much risk, but because they don’t want to buy the type of risk they perceive a Founder is selling. Early-stage VCs take as much risk as almost any type of investor. It’s not the quantum of risk VCs get concerned about, it’s the type of risk they are comfortable buying. At PHX Ventures, for example, we primarily buy some stage risk - post revenue but usually less than $1m in ARR. This is the stage of risk we told our investors we would buy. After we invest, companies have to get built over the next decade. We are comfortable buying company-building risk. Said another way, we try not to buy a lot of product risk. When there is an early signal that customers are buying, using, and loving a product, we get more comfortable that there isn’t substantial and unknown product risk. We don't want to buy much product risk. We also try to avoid buying business model risk. For us, this means we only buy risk in business models we understand well. And that’s B2B software. To be clear, this type of risk isn't in the business model itself, it's in our lack of understanding of non-B2B software businesses. When VCs pass, it’s almost always because they don’t want to buy, or don't understand, the type of risk the Founder is selling. As such, Founders would be far more efficient at raising capital if they prioritized understanding what specific risks the investors they are pitching like to buy. _______ PS - Let's make PHX a top software city. “He responded to the questions I sent via email,” Hero told me. After hearing that, I knew I was talking to a progressive CEO. Along Tony Tan, Injap and his wife Cathy, Jon is one of the founders of DragonFi, a stock brokerage firm with the mission of developing a technology-driven ecosystem of wealth-building tools that will empower every Filipino towards the attainment of his or her financial aspirations. We visited the DragonFi office and met with Jon and Cathy to discuss in details the response to the questions Hero sent but I was blown away with their presentation of the app they created. I’m no trader and I invest via No Ceiling, but listening to Jon and Cathy talk shop - technicals of stocks and investing - I was surprised to understand what the conversation was about. I learned why growth rate of dividends is a good indicator and not simply the total amount of dividends being given by companies. I also learned why four to seven-percent is a safe rate for dividend yield - it’s not too low to be unattractive but not too high to be unsustainable. But as much as I enjoyed learning new things on the technical side of investment, the business person in me observed a few lessons from the founders: Here are a few of them: 1. Jon listens to the customer. We’re at the DragonFi office for about three hours because of the email sent by Hero. I remember my time at Lay Bare when I call clients and they get surprised the Director was on the other side, asking about their experience. My point simply is that customer service starts from the top. The team is who the Leader is. 2. Jon listens to his wife Cathy. I’m a fan of family businesses when they’re working right. In this case, Jon and Cathy operate in a push-and-pull manner or what we call “Situational Leadership” in our language. For us, we believe the best person who must lead in the situation is the most capable and not simply the one who owns the title “CEO”. 3. Jon and Cathy finds a way to make things simple. Whenever we raise a matter, it’s either on the development pipeline or in consideration, so long as it makes the app much easier to use. “DragonFi is leapfrogging traditional players using technology,” I told Hero after our visit. Indeed, at its best, that’s what a startup does - disrupt the status quo with a simpler, better, or faster product or program, unleashing a torrent of changes in the process. Day 10: Nearly 100 VCs followed our Build-In-Public month 1! (plus a few founders and a couple of LPs!) In December Ralph King and I decided to open up even MORE the building of our #DeepTech VC firm and community. From January we pivoted to releasing our investor updates to the world 🌍 and show you what is like to build a fund from the inside. We were inspired, amongst others, by founders like Ankur Nagpal from Carry and the Open-Source Software (#OSS) movement we both love as engineers. 💻 I used to try and manually send a redacted version of our investors update to prospective LPs interested in our fund for later closings or future funds (the "not yet" investor camp). So we thought: surely we could be a bit more careful on the redaction and share it with the world? 🤔 So that's what we did :) And with our new (very alpha) #AI powering the data extraction and initial drafting, we launched. And now we are seeing the results! 🎉 1 #LP has reached out on LinkedIn asking for more info, and 2 fellow GPs mentioned they may have some companies fitting our strategy! Whilst we paused investment until this final closing is over, it's an encouraging sign. 🔥 Could we see the beginning of a Open-Source VC movement?
