As AI continues to advance, the question arises: do we trust AI to summarize our contributions to a panel discussion? My answer: to a certain extent. This viewpoint developed after reviewing an AI-generated summary of my contribution to the panel "Boosting digital collaboration for resilience and sustainability in shipping" held during the UNCTAD eWeek 2023. It was great attending the AI Fringe conference this morning. Listening to the discussions off the back of the Seoul Summit from a diverse panel around AI safety, responsibility and ethics was incredibly interesting! It goes without saying that AI is a very fast paced, growing area, but with that has to come the security, responsibility and other considerations of creating, using and commercialising AI models. One topic from the panel I'd like to highlight is data literacy. To have productive and coherent conversations around AI, everyone involved needs to know what AI is! - Where is the data coming from? - How is it used? - How is your data being protected? - What do we mean by bias in data? Empowering everyone in society with the knowledge of how their data is used is incredibly important. Whether high level or technical, this knowledge does not just belong to the few. AI is for everyone and things need to evolve with regards to policy and digital rights. Bridging the gap between the technical and non-technical, there are some easy things we can do within our organisations to get started: ℹ️ Be transparent about our AI tools - provide non-technical descriptions and explanations 💡 Share the knowledge - e.g. run internal learning sessions on different topics at a high level 🗣️ Encourage open conversations about AI and data Do you have any others to add to this list? #AIFringe

December is here and with it comes one of my favorite yearly report : Atomico’s “State of European Tech”. It’s a 258 pages report on which I’ve decided to focus only on the “Talent” chapter that’s about 30 pages (and it’s a lot of graphs aha). There’s a lot to learn so I’ll share my personal highlights : 📈 European tech has expanded its workforce from slightly over 750,000 people (2018) to 2.3 million today (2023). It’s more than x3 in five years ! 🤔 But, in the survey, they identified that 32% of the respondents feel that it is less attractive to work for a European tech company compared to 12 months ago. So the perceived attractiveness of working in this industry is dropping. 🪿The migration flow of European talents is very interesting to observe. While most of the European talent that leaves the continent goes to the United States, Europe is also a huge talent magnet for tech talent from the US, and attracts the same amount back, on average netting out slightly in the green. All in all very informative report, curious to here you all about it !

Biggest challenge from yesterday's Webinar is "Data Quality and Availability". Makes sense, because "bad data in, bad data out!" So how do you ensure you have enough quality data points to make better decisions? Thankfully, long before my time, the great minds at Ardmore Shipping Corporation decided to invest in high-frequency sensor data more than a decade ago... But until combination of enhanced connectivity and AI came into the picture, a lot of the work behind sifting through the mountain of data and to analyze it was done "manually" which takes time. Now that we are able to extract and analysis almost simultaneously, there is greater ability to sort out the bad data and focus and highlight the important ones to help you make better decisions. With platforms such as DeepSea Technologies, we are making this possible - one step at a time. What's your biggest challenge?
