Vice Dean for Clinical Technology, Memorial Hermann Professor & Otorhinolaryngology Chair at UTHealth
In this UTHealth Houston ORL Grand Rounds, Alexander Simko, MD gives a comprehensive overview of the pathophysiology, laryngeal involvement, and management options for several autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, GPA, amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, relapsing polychondritis, pemphigus, lupus, and scleroderma. He also discusses the specific features of bamboo nodes, which are seen in various autoimmune conditions, and how they can be treated with medical, speech, and surgical therapy. Dr. Simko emphasized the importance of having a high suspicion for undiagnosed autoimmune disease when evaluating patients with dysphonia or airway compromise, and the need to collaborate with rheumatology and other specialties for optimal care. https://lnkd.in/gnRQ6rdC #UTHealthHouston #ENTGrandRounds #AutoimmuneDisease #RheumatoidArthritis #GPA #Amyloidosis #Sarcoidosis #RelapsingPolychondritis #Pemphigus #Lupus #Scleroderma #BambooNodes

Researchers from Peking Union Medical College analyzed longitudinal cohort data from over 4000 SLE patients and found that those with serologically active but clinically inactive lupus (SACQ) can be divided into three subgroups. These subgroups have different risks of future flares and organ damage. This new understanding could help doctors tailor treatments for each patient, potentially improving long-term outcomes. #lupusresearch #SACQ #SLE https://lnkd.in/gsvWESAE

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!! On May 18, 2024 I will be presenting along with four physicians at the 2024 Hawaii Rhumatology Society Patient Conference! 50 million people or 1 in 5 people are affected by autoimmune disease in the United States. Why did they invite me? Because the Fascianator Method has demonstrated efficacious results for people with autoimmune diseases like lupus, scleroderma, Sjogren's Syndrome, glaucoma and Ehlers-Danlos Hypermobility Disorder. What kind of results? How about cysts on their livers that end up disappearing upon their doctor's followup appointment? How about intraocular eye-pressure decreasing to normal levels while eye glass prescriptions are reduced because they start seeing better? How about a 50% reduction in the inflammatory marker in the blood called anti-nuclear antibodies? If you see a Rheumatologist, you should come to this conference! Sign up here: Rheumatology Patient Education Conference Date: Sat, May 18 • 8:30 AM HST Location: 1860 Komo Mai Drive, Pearl City, HI 96782 https://lnkd.in/gbN6_UBh #fascianator #rhumatology #itsnotafoamroller #painfreeliving #sjogrens #lupus #scleroderma

According to Mayo Clinic, as many as half of adults with systemic lupus develop Lupus Nephritis - a complication of lupus with more severe flares and damage in the kidneys. Ignored and untreated, Lupus Nephritis can lead to severe kidney inflammation, blood and protein in the urine, and eventually impaired kidney function or even kidney failure. Studies such as the RestoreD Study aim to discover potential treatment options for patients dealing with Lupus Nephritis. Always discuss with a doctor and learn more about the RestoreD Study and the research geared toward Lupus Nephritis patients: https://bit.ly/41CYwAi
