We are delighted to welcome our summer interns to etasca. Throughout the Summer they will help build our models, further our thought leadership and work on client facing projects in various areas of energy and chemicals. We asked them for their insight into what challenges lie ahead for the industry. Lance Simandjoentak is a third year UCL chemical engineering graduate joining our team today!   "A crucial concept that I find compelling is the conundrum of the energy trilemma. This revolves around three unique pillars: energy security, energy sustainability and energy affordability. It's clear that the three pillars cannot be thought of in isolation to one another, presenting a complex challenge.   As an example, importing energy sources can supplement domestic inventory and enhance energy security but what happens when the energy security relies on external sources? This can lead to an over-dependence increasing vulnerability and exposure to geopolitical factors contributing to energy insecurity. Imported energy sources can also be subjected to import taxes and price fluctuations. For reference, in 2023, Europe experienced its biggest deficit in oil, where production only met 23% of its demand, gas production only 44% and coal production meeting only 58%. All at a time where Europe is trying to lead the way in the energy transition. The energy trilemma is just one of multiple prospects that challenge industry highlighting the importance of making energy supply affordable. A test case for this is the evolving CBAM regulation which increases energy sustainability factors but could have an impact on energy affordability.   etasca is at the forefront of analysing both market elements and technology factors in the energy and chemical industries as they face up to this challenge. Each year at Chemsolv, like all other places I have worked, I get the privilege to host and groom students on internship. My goal ìs and has always been to prepare them for the world of work. Give the interns an edge and help them discover that which they have inside. That gift of uniqueness, character and the strive for excellence. The training, usually tailored, intuitive and interactive challenges their thinking and problem solving skills, teamwork and versatility in the upstream oil and Gas /petroleum industry. A lot of the time, I pull parts and pieces, disguise them in a cunning array of sequels and then leave them to create, resolve, innovate or mould that which is unseen. Its interesting how they discover the tools hidden before their very own senses of perspectives - bringing innovation to the fore. Amazing things happen and this is why we do the things we do. One of these interns wrote me a pretty letter below.

As a child, I was fondly dubbed "why" due to my insatiable curiosity—questions were my forte! Reflecting on this childhood nickname, I realize how that innate curiosity has become a defining trait shaping my journey in engineering.   What's the most crucial trait for an engineer stepping into a summer job? Reflecting on a recurring question from my interviews with potential summer students at Aker BP ASA: And I must say, it's a question that truly resonated with me.   The answer? A combination of being proactive and having an insatiable hunger for learning. Sure, there are numerous essential traits, but seizing the time for its true value stands out to me.   It's about engaging yourself in the environment, understanding the dynamics, and connecting with the talented individuals around you. What are they working on? What challenges are they facing? And most importantly, where can you contribute?   Moreover, this proactive approach might just open opportunities that could lead the way for a meaningful, industry-specific master thesis with an internal mentor from the company. Imagine the possibilities!   Curiosity and self-propulsion are indispensable in the oil and gas industry. It's about not waiting idly for tasks or solutions but rather actively seeking ways to make an impact. Being an engineer here demands a proactive mindset and the willingness to take the initiative.   To all aspiring engineers out there, my advice is simple: Dive in, absorb everything, and let your curiosity steer your journey. The more you actively engage, the more doors will open – not just for a summer job but for a rewarding career ahead.   PS: Wondering why "why"? My never-ending questions paved my path—curiosity is a trait I've embraced ever since!

As a recent graduate with a burning passion for the Energy Industry and dreams of becoming a Project Management Professional, the 45-days Online Internship Program organized by the Petroleum Engineers Association was an absolute game-changer! 🌍🛠 From day one, I was immersed in a world of hands-on experiences, cutting-edge practices, and invaluable mentorship. The effectiveness of the program was unparalleled, especially for beginners like myself. The program includes courses which cover The carefully curated curriculum provided a seamless transition from theory to practical application. 💪📚 What truly set this program apart were the numerous avenues it opened up. I started with Worley as a member of our internship program in 2021 and completed the intensive eight-week program as an undergrad in the process team. I loved the work I was doing and wanted to stay visible to Worley, so I started the conversation and continued working a few days a week here until I graduated last August. 🌱What did you know about Worley? I knew Worley as a conventional oil and gas company, but it wasn’t until I joined the internship program that I discovered how many opportunities a consulting business really had. I had always planned to join a mining company to do my grad program but once I discovered the available pathways here, I decided on Worley. 🌱What opportunities have come your way at Worley? I was fortunate to work closely with our Business Performance Director on the Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) Strategy in 2022. This involved being present in strategic meetings and workshops with the ANZ leadership team- giving me great insight into how a high performing team strategises for the future. This opportunity made me really excited to be a part of the Worley team! 🌱What’s it like being a female graduate in a male dominated industry? I’ve always been proactive and have grabbed opportunities when I’ve seen them. When our ANZ President said her door was always open to the interns, I gathered up the courage and introduced myself - that conversation led to me working on her strategy which was very cool. I recognise that being willing to leverage my network within Worley has led to the experiences I’ve had - they won’t just fall into my lap on their own. However, it is an exciting time to be a woman in engineering  – there’s so many opportunities and I want to grab them to my advantage. 🌱Why should someone apply for a Worley graduate role? Worley’s grad community is so diverse and there’s so many activities available that it almost feels like being at uni with my cohort. The projects here are just so diverse, you can start on a green hydrogen project and then move across into a critical minerals study and you just can’t do that so much in bigger companies. #Flexibility at Worley means everyone’s work week can look different whether it’s me going to the gym before work or our leaders leaving the office to pick up their kids from school and logging in again later – I really love being able to build my own work week.
