Certified and more sophisticated (ish) now - not just your average drinker! I'd like to thank my employer for investing in me and sending me to the WSET course. While it's just an entry-level certificate, I've gained a sea of knowledge about the world of wine. Now I can appreciate a good wine much more and have great context for conversations. Course booked with Leiths School of Food & Wine for February to start the process of getting my Ships Cooks Certification. This course along with my current qualifications & certificates are step 1 then just need the sea time. I’ve asked a few chefs in the industry about this particular certification & it seems to get mixed opinions. The way I see it is if it’s coming in and will eventually be mandatory, it’s best to crack on with it. Using time off to get qualifications and certifications is the way to go. #neverstoplearning

I received a WSET Alumni email earlier today saying that 2024 saw a record number of Wine Diploma graduates. Great news if you ask me. However, there has been a lot of discussion here on LinkedIn lately regarding whether or not the wine business needs more WSET or otherwise wine-educated people. The point emphasized is that there is no lack of wine knowledge in the industry and that what the industry needs is not more educators, but more consumer understanding, more marketing and communication skills. I wholeheartedly agree that it's high time the wine business started taking marketing seriously and even prioritizing it at the same level as the product quality and state-of-the-artedness of the equipment. However, it does not seem right to oppose one over the other. People who come to WSET typically do not do it the first day after leaving secondary school with the idea of becoming wine educators. More often than not you see at any WSET (or other) course people who are professionals already in sales, marketing, and/or management. They come for more knowledge and a personal challenge. In any case, it cannot possibly hurt the industry to have its professionals educated about the subject of the industry. How can wine education be more practical? In my humble opinion the wine education industry is less practical, it’s take so much time to memorise so many details that we forget next week, and doesn’t help us to solve everyday problems in our jobs. In general I believe the whole education industry will change, it has been the same for decades, and these days most people don’t see as much benefit or value as in the old days. Even when you hear from some of the most respected business leaders in the world, who have changed their industries, they value many things more than a degree. One of the biggest problems in the wine education system, is that it doesn’t necessarily increase your chances a getting job, you won’t be more “employable” than someone else just because of the level of your wine education. I would like to see subjects added that are more relevant to today’s world, like: AI, Digital Marketing, How to sell wines, How we can understand customer language, How we can engage with Generations Y & Z, etc.. I can spend my whole morning adding new subjects.. What do you think about the Wine Education?
