U.S. food policy has a profound impact on the world. A new effort promoting indigenous crops sheds light on how we can help small-holder farmers to leverage crop diversity and nutrition. Indigenous knowledge, and neglected crops, are some promising nods in the right direction. It's crucial to consider the constraints of poor farmers and develop solutions that are truly useful for them. Covid has underscored the importance of self-reliance in food production. Relying solely on external sources may not suffice in future crises. While achieving 30% local production for food security remains challenging, it is crucial amidst the current realities. Balancing cost-effectiveness with local production presents difficulties due to operational expenses and limited economies of scale in farming. There is no simple solution, but innovative approaches are essential to support our farmers sustainably. While investing in overseas farms can enhance the food supply chain, it cannot replace local agriculture. One potential strategy involves governmental intervention to bridge price disparities, especially through sustained demand from major local entities like Supermarket Chains,Military Camps and Sats etc with Cold storage facilities to create buffer. Addressing the struggles of farmers is imperative to ensure a profitable and sustainable agricultural sector. Existing farm policies have proven ineffective, leading to losses for investors in shuttered farms. COP, I am confused, the article says:- “Nations that over-consume meat will be advised to limit their intake, while developing countries — where under-consumption of meat adds to a prevalent nutrition challenge — will need to improve their livestock farming, according to the FAO.” What am I missing? Did they just accidentally convey that the one will offset the other?!  And why say nothing about what is wrong with the way the ‘rich world’ currently farms animals? And, for developing nations, what do they mean by ‘improve’ their livestock farming? Industrialize them into feedlots? Wouldn’t meat consumption drastically drop if meat-eaters boycotted meat from industrial feedlots? Would these feedlots survive without government subsidies? Raising animals correctly/ethically for poison-free high nutritional value is currently not cheap because demand is low and such farms are still relatively few, farmers not receiving financial support. Cheaper industrial meat has less nutritional value and in fact poison people... This too is costly from a health perspective! AND, instead of the animals grazing in situ, herbicide contaminated GMO grain grown on other expanses of land are fed to these tortured animals, while the land these feedlots are on also pollute the environment on an industrial scale.  They call these feedlots ‘space saving’ but the grain used to feed them is grown on other expanses of land, also destroying biodiversity there. Animals in feedlots are extractive monocrops, not performing their normal environmental services causing a myriad of problems – i.e. the relationship with the environment is not a mutually beneficial reciprocal one as it should be. Although scalable with good management, raising animals on pasture can never be industrialised. Nature will not allow. Shouldn't meat-eaters just stop buying meat from feedlots, opting instead for ethically farmed unpoisoned meat from animals raised on pasture, preferably locally? Yes, that means you will have to EAT LESS MEAT due to cost and limited availability, but you get the added benefit of being nutritionally better off and no longer contributing to the environmental damage caused by industrial meat farming. [People crave so much meat (and other junk food) because their bodies are not receiving the nutrition they need in their diets and the poisoned food they consume actually removes nutrients. When we eat correctly and are able to listen to our bodies, our bodies tell us when we are satiated, without the need to binge and without the added cost of consuming junkfood (that money can be diverted to the cost of buying ethically produced local food).] https://lnkd.in/dfRNU42n

Livestock farming accounts for more than 14% of all global emissions. If we are going to mitigate the climate crisis and create a net zero world, this number has to come down. I love debates about how we are going to do this - sustainable agriculture, lab grown meats, vertical farms. Adopting more plant-based options is a clear way to reduce emissions, but not everyone need to go “full vegan”. There is definitely a balance. But instead of being part of the solution, the meat industry would rather spread misinformation, demonise plant-based alternatives and run greenwashed campaigns. As we kick off the election campaign, the question for many farmers and the wider public increasingly concerned about unhealthy food is, will food and farming be on the election agenda? The answer is probably not, which would be a huge lost opportunity, particularly as more and more of us are questioning the sustainability of our current food production systems.
