Decarbonisation in chemical process industry: Yara leads the way

"Renewable ammonia is an important part of the decarbonization puzzle, however developing it at scale takes time. As the world is rapidly approaching 2030, we are also working to produce low-carbon ammonia with CCS to enable the hydrogen economy and develop the emerging markets for low-emission ammonia," says Hans-Olav Raen, CEO of Yara Clean Ammonia.   Last week, we celebrated the inauguration of our 24 MW renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya Industrial Park in Porsgrunn. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who was with us at the project's launch two years ago, returned to witness its realization. 🌿 Once fully operational, this plant will produce around 20,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia annually, cutting 41,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from the site. As the largest facility of its kind in Europe, it plays a crucial role in enhancing production whilst cutting emissions. 🌍🎯 We recognize that scaling up production won’t be easy. Electrochaea and Erik Thun Group have announced negotiations for the off-take of e-methane to be utilized as green marine fuel. This collaboration marks a pivotal move towards reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry. Electrochaea, through its subsidiary BioCAT Roslev Aps in Denmark, is set to produce e-methane utilizing its patented bio-methanation technology. The process involves the use of renewable power from wind to produce green hydrogen, which is then combined with CO2 from biogas production to generate e-methane. This eco-friendly fuel will be integrated into the Danish gas grid, contributing to the decarbonization efforts across Europe. Erik Thun AB, a leading shipping company, intends to utilize e-methane to replace fossil-based LNG fuel in its vessels. This strategic shift aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability and its endeavor to lead the transition towards renewable fuels in the maritime sector. 🎊Yara Clean Ammonia's renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya, Norway is officially open!🎊      We have reached a major milestone in our decarbonization journey by producing hydrogen and ammonia with renewable energy. 🎉  Made with electrolysis of water and renewable energy, the hydrogen produced at the plant will replace natural gas as feedstock and annually cut 41,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from the site, marking an important step in our decarbonization journey! ♻️    💚 This project has come to life thanks to partnerships across the whole value chain. A big thank you to Lantmännen, who’s been committed as a customer since the very start. The hurdles we’ve encountered in the project have been solved thanks to trust and close cooperation with our EPC-contractor Linde Engineering and PEM electrolyser manufacturer ITM Power. We also want to thank Enova SF for contributing with a grant, enabling us to reach the investment decision.   Yara Clean Ammonia is also working to enable the hydrogen economy by producing low-carbon ammonia with carbon capture & storage (CCS). Essential to reach the Paris Agreement, low-carbon ammonia and CCS is a critical step to decarbonize rapidly and profitably. Spearheaded by Norwegian companies 𝐃𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐇𝐘𝐃𝐒) as part of the 𝐄𝐔-𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐑𝐎𝐁𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐎𝐍 𝐇𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎 project, this groundbreaking venture marks the first of its kind in Rogaland to utilize renewable electricity for the commercial production of green hydrogen. The grand opening ceremony, held at the Grand Hotell Eigersund on February 8, saw the presence of esteemed figures including the 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐉𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐕𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞, alongside various industrial, political, and scientific stakeholders. The completion of construction in 2023, facilitated by 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 in collaboration with Norwegian partner Liquiline, underscores a significant stride towards clean energy solutions. Post-ROBINSON project conclusion in fall 2024, operations will be seamlessly transitioned to Dalane Hydrogen AS, a venture jointly owned by 𝐃𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢 𝐀𝐒, 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐀𝐒 (𝐇𝐘𝐃𝐒), and 𝐄𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐍æ𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐠 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐧 𝐊𝐅.
