The #HassAvocadoBoard is educating the BOLD class members on the vital role of international trade in the avocado industry. Did you know that over 90% of the avocados sold in the U.S. come from international sources? This eye-opening fact often sparks debates within our industry, with some advocating for protectionist measures. But knowledge is power, and that's why we recently held an Agricultural Trade and Avocados (ATEC) session to shed light on the significance of international trade. In our session, we delved into the historical context of international trade and its critical role in boosting our economy. We emphasized the importance of agricultural international trade, which not only benefits consumers but also ensures the availability of avocados year-round. This means you can enjoy our avocados during the domestic season and even when there's no local production. Our deep dive didn't stop there. We discussed the intricacies of the international avocado trade, highlighting the rigorous 7-year process it underwent to gain access to the entire U.S. marketplace region by region. It's a testament to the science and stringent phytosanitary standards that protect our industry. Our session leader, Melissa Kessler, a communication educator, encouraged our BOLD Class 3 members to consider how they can share this story with audiences who might lack this crucial knowledge. Becoming advocates for trade, they now understand that closing markets is not an economically sound approach for our industry. Just before bidding 2023 farewell, we traveled to southern Spain to welcome its glorious strawberry season and visited major growers in Huelva. It was a great opportunity for us to learn how the supply chain is operating- from the picking in the field to the difference in the packing processes. Whether you have a fully automated packing house or packing right in the field, there is a lot LiVA can do for you: our external validation reaffirms our ability to add four days of shelf-life at the retailer, making a crucial impact at the last mile. For the delicate strawberries, shipping in a truck to the rest of Europe makes shelf-life super challenging. Adding even two days can disrupt the entire strawberries market. This trip we were accompanied with our investor and board member Roni Eiger - thank you so much for arranging the trip and tours. We would also like to thank the generous growers for hosting us at their packing houses, introducing us to the team, and answering all of our questions. The commitment, dedication and passion of our family farms were recognised at our annual Tirlán Quality Grain Awards. Our champion food grade oats growers, John and Ann Deering and their son, Mark, from near Emo in Co Laois, took the overall award with a crop of gluten-free oats. Tirlán's premium gluten-free oats are sought after for snacks and beverages due to our closed loop supply chain and 14-step OatSecure process to ensure it is gluten-free. This year saw the first ever Sustainability Award presented to the Sheridan farm from Kilberry, Navan, Co Meath. It came as new Teagasc research on the Tirlán grain pool shows that Irish grain has one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world. The research unveiled at the awards is the first of its kind using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology specifically developed for Irish grain on a wide range of commercially-grown Irish cereals. The study found the carbon footprint of Irish grain is very low compared to grains produced in other grain producing regions in Europe and North America. Accounting for straw incorporation, the study showed the net carbon footprint could be close to net zero. Meet the sheep, and this time the Serra da Estrela Sheep from Portugal The Serra da Estrela sheep, native to the rugged terrain of Portugal's highest mountain range, is found in the territories of the Mondego River basin, covering multiple municipalities. This includes regions such as Arganil, Gouveia, Seia, and Tábua. Characteristics: - Defined by two varieties: white and black. - Both sexes bear spiral horns. - Average live weight: 50-60kg for females, 80-100kg for males. - Period of sexual activity extends throughout the year. - Used mostly for dairy farming, primarily for milk production. - Also valued for meat and wool production. The milk of Serra da Estrela sheep is famously used to produce Queijo Serra da Estrela, a traditional Portuguese cheese. This cheese is renowned for its creamy texture and distinctive flavor, and it's often enjoyed with bread or fruit preserves.
