🥩 🥓 🍖 Cultivated meat vs. traditional meat = technology vs. nature; future vs. past; corporation vs. community; and posthuman vs. human 🥩 🥓 🍖 Do you agree? After attending Dr Miller's lecture on literary history at #CultivateUK, I discovered that this is generally how sci-fi literature has depicted cultivated meat since its first appearance in Mary Bradley Lane's book, Mizora: A Prophecy, in 1881. Cultivated meat has made numerous appearances in literature since then, from meaty blobs that swim in vats of serum to a pulsating mass of meat that regrows each time you take a slice. Not all of these representations have been entirely positive (including associations with addiction, purity, elitism and genocide). And, as Professor Goodman and Dr Mylan both pointed out in their talks, the narrative is important. The inspiring multi-disciplinary conference expanded my perspective on cellular agriculture. We listened to talks on the multifaceted diffusion of alternative proteins and the perceptions of farmers regarding cultivated meat. Additionally, my supervisor Eirini Theodosiou and my PhD colleague Ben Dages gave fantastic presentations about our research at Aston University (showcasing work led by Dr Jason Michael Thomas and Jean-Baptiste R. G. Souppez), emphasising the importance of producing safe and healthy cultivated meat that closely resembles the texture and taste of traditional meat. The conference reinforced the importance of understanding the complex layers of cultivated meat, not just from a technological perspective but also from societal, cultural and consumer viewpoints. It's clear that the future of food is a narrative we all need to participate in and events like Cultivate are crucial in shaping that story.
