Chief Foreign-Affairs Correspondent at The Wall Street Journal. Author of Our Enemies Will Vanish and three other books.

Excited that my debut novel, 📚No Country for Love 📚will be released in coming days. A murder mystery, a tragic love story and an investigation into what it takes to survive against impossible odds, it’s based in part on my own family’s experiences in the darkest years of the 20th century. The book is set in Ukraine between 1930 and 1953, a time when it was the deadliest place on the planet. The country lost many millions of people to Stalin’s artificial famine, political reprisals, the Holocaust and the horrors of war and insurgency. What did it take to live through all that? And what was the price of survival? I began this project in 2014, when war first returned to Ukraine, and finished it just before the full-fledged Russian invasion of 2022. Imagined scenes of Kyiv’s destruction became reality just weeks later. Hari Kunzru has described 📚No Country for Love 📚as a “sweeping romantic epic,” Gary Shteyngart wrote that it is “beautiful, important and timely,” while Christina Lamb praised it as a “captivating sweep of a novel about love, resilience and impossible choices in a Ukraine caught between Soviets and Nazism and riven by war.” The novel, which is also slated to be published in French, Italian and Dutch next year, will be available on July 4 as an e-book around the world, and as a hardcover in the United Kingdom and everywhere else outside North America. In the United States and Canada, the hardcover edition will go on sale from January 2025. If you’re interested in reading No Country for Love, may I suggest preordering now, so that you’ll have it in your hand on the first day of publication? Preorders and first-week sales are crucial to launching a book these days, and you can preorder it now at Amazon, Apple Books or any retailer of your choice. If you are in London or Edinburgh, I would be thrilled to see you at the novel’s launch at Hatchards Piccadilly on July 8, or at my events at Topping Books on July 9 and the Frontline Club in London on July 11. The full schedule of the book tour, including events in the United States later this year and promotion for my recent nonfiction book 📕 Our Enemies Will Vanish📕 (which has just been shortlisted for the Orwell Prize), can be found on my website www.yarotrof.com In a way, 📚No Country for Love 📚and 📕Our Enemies Will Vanish 📕are connected: it’s impossible to understand the resilience of Ukraine’s resistance today without appreciating the generational trauma carried by survivors ofthe Soviet past. I’m very much looking forward to hearing what you think. And if you’d like to help spread the word about the book, please leave a review on Amazon, Goodreads, or other retailer sites and post on social media with the hashtag #NoCountryForLove .
