The auto industry has seen some wild swings over the past few years, and we're following the human capital as the industry shifts once again. The automakers have experienced a lot of change to normal operation in recent years from the huge shifts in demand, availability and thus pricing during covid, to the automakers who piled up inventory as they prepped for a manufacturing drought due to a labor strike, which lasted much shorter than expected, and now a sharp decline for new car demand that is directly impacting the US auto workforce.

General Motors (GM) has made significant workforce adjustments, cutting over 1,000 jobs globally, with approximately 600 of those layoffs centered around its Detroit headquarters. The primary impact falls on GM’s software and services division. These changes come in the wake of a recent leadership shakeup, including the departure of former Apple executive Mike Abbott. GM emphasizes that these measures are not merely cost-cutting but rather an effort to streamline operations for greater efficiency. As the automotive industry navigates challenges related to electric vehicles and software-defined technologies, automakers like GM are making strategic choices to position themselves for the future. General Motors hits the brakes on jobs: a software reboot gone wrong? ⬇ 🚗 GM has announced layoffs affecting 1k salaried employees in its global workforce, hitting the software and services division hard. Around 600 employees at GM’s tech campus near Detroit will be impacted. 💻 The layoffs come as GM aims to "simplify for speed and excellence," prioritizing investments with the greatest impact. The affected division includes teams working on vehicle infotainment, OnStar services, and the Super Cruise driver-assist system. ⚙️ GM has faced software challenges recently, notably with the Chevy Blazer EV, which experienced infotainment and charging issues that led to a stop-sale notice. Though resolved, the incident highlighted the automaker’s ongoing struggles in its push to make its Android-based infotainment a true competitor to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 🛑 The cuts also follow GM’s decision to cancel its Ultra Cruise project, merging it with the Super Cruise team. Is it me, or do you see it too? GM role announcements at Stellantis stores. I've noticed a trend and want to know if you've seen it too. Folks are announcing their new roles or promotions on LinkedIn as normal but there's a difference. 7 of the last 10 General Manager role announcements I've see are at Stellantis stores. So it bodes the question: are talented GM's leaving Stellantis stores for other opportunities allowing others to jump in the seat and if so who do you think will be the wiser in the end? It's no secret that Stellantis has been struggling. BUT, is it a good idea to jump ship or will they be kicking themselves if/when Stellantis makes a roaring comeback?
