ON NOW IN VANCOUVER - THE INDIGENOUS PARTNERSHIPS SUCCESS SHOWCASE (IPSS) - The Indigenous Partnerships Success Showcase is an annual event responding to the growing demand for practical guidance on how First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities and their enterprise partners can work together, in common purpose, for shared success. In the heart of Vancouver, the Indigenous Partnership Success Showcase (IPSS) is marking its fifth anniversary at the Convention Centre West. This event, designed to be a crossroads of innovative partnerships and Reconciliation, stands as a testament to the evolving relationship between Indigenous communities and the broader Canadian business landscape. Canada's Indigenous economy is worth $30 billion and it is expected to more than triple in the coming years, hitting $100 billion by 2025. Much of this success comes through partnerships, like the ones at the heart of the Indigenous Partnerships Success Showcase. Economic reconciliation is the key to securing bright futures for First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities — and it opens the door to continued prosperity for all Canadians in this era of transformative change. The theme for 2024, “Reconciliation in Action,” couldn’t be more apt. It reflects a journey from the acknowledgment of past injustices to the active building of a future where Indigenous communities are integral to Canada’s economic fabric. Adopted in 2015, and announced in 2016, the 2030 SDGs go beyond the Millenium Development Goals set for developing nations and establish an agenda that includes all countries. The 2030 Goals address three dimensions of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection. Nations have interpreted each goal from the perspective of their own challenges and opportunities to address them. Canada's interpretation of each SDG is uniquely tailored to our nation's challenges and opportunities, with StatsCan providing data to assess our progress. It's National Indigenous Peoples Day, so let’s talk about free, prior and informed consent (FPIC). It’s an important principle that aims to boost trust and reduce potential friction in areas where Indigenous Peoples have interests and rights. Without FPIC, Canada could risk a return to court fights over resource rights, lost foreign investment and a diminished ability to reach Net Zero. RBC’s recent report on “The Business Of Reconciliation” (http://spr.ly/6043gyfFD) outlined what governments, businesses and Indigenous Peoples can do to make real progress and advance Canada’s climate goals: ➡️ Business should embrace FPIC as a process to help find common ground with Indigenous communities on prospective projects. ➡️ First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities and nations can view enhanced collaboration with the private sector and government agencies as models to develop and move beyond bilateral Crown-Indigenous relations. ➡️ Ottawa should continue to clarify federal laws to ensure Indigenous consent is considered fundamental to any decision impacting a community’s rights or way of life. ➡️ Business should develop and share leading practices for engagement with Indigenous communities. ➡️ Indigenous communities and outside industry should view equity participation as pivotal to successful partnerships. ➡️ Government and the private sector should prioritize investment in financial tools and skills in Indigenous communities to help develop local capacity to participle in, and shape, economic development.
