AS A LATE-GAME BABY BOOMER, I'M HAPPY TO PASS ON THIS NEWS: WE HAVE SOME UBER-TALENTED YOUNG ENERGY LEADERS JUST WAITING FOR THE BATON... ...and I saw this up-close-and-personal in action this week as we launched our new Energy Ambassadors program at the CSEE - Canadian Society for Evolving Energy. In a crowded boardroom kick-off hosted by CSEE member Integrated Sustainability, a diverse cross-section of #youngprofessionals signaled their intention to be part of critical change dynamics as our various #energysystems move into an era of rapid and profound flux. Through the program, young leaders from both member and non-member companies will engage with each other and other systems professionals to tackle and provide solutions to real-world and real-time challenges and opportunities faced by their companies specifically and the sector(s) more generally. There will both specific workshops geared to their areas of interest but the true value proposition will come from how the results of their research efforts will be surfaced through the diverse range of programming we offer at CSEE. Spearheaded by board director Stuart Torr, who leads Integrated Sustainability, the program is a critical part of our own #evolution at CSEE. The kick-off mixer involved a bit of a history lesson on change for the young leaders, many of whom hadn't even been born when we started at the Canadian Coalbed Methane Forum in the 1990s. Over time, we became the Canadian Society for Unconventional Gas and then the Canadian Society for Unconventional Resources before "evolving" in 2022 formally into the CSEE - Canadian Society for Evolving Energy. While we are still committed to being an apolitical, technically and technologically oriented member organization, our ethos also remains around leading change built on collaboration and convening the right actors for the right dialogues at the right time. This is also an important part of our member expansion plans. Our Energy Ambassadors will be critical to executing on that multi-layered mandate, which includes a strong focus on the "ambassadorial" dimensions of the program: creating and building trust with the diverse external stakeholder community with which our sectors engage. Anybody who doesn't think our sector is in good hands (dare I say it, in even better hands than it is now) just needs to watch our program roll out. She tells us: "There is a real monumental shift to being the National Energy System Operator (NESO), and what we can be. "That transition, is emblematic of a whole system change. Critically ensuring a security of supply, which is a challenge of a generation, where we want to connect with others to make sure we succeed. "The Energy Act marked a significant milestone of many years of planning with NESO at the centre. Central to our ethos is independence from government, not to be separate but to be genuinely independent so we can listen to all the voices and make the difficult trade offs so we can approach this in a whole system way. "A public body that underpins that independence, that is autonomous and transparent. That transparency will foster that collaboration and where we want to get with our stakeholders. "Collectively we need to transcend the silos that exist today. We are going to take a strategic role to plan the entire energy system. "There are challenges of recruitment and still some way to with the skills gap challenge. Working together to help train up staff. "We will advocate for solutions that will ultimately opt for net zero. We will have to continue to really drive for that whole system entity that is more sustainable, secure and affordable energy system. "We want stakeholder engagement at a regional and local level helping to align national and local plans. "We would really like you to share this journey with us on this monumental transformation." Great day spent discussing all things Connections with representatives across the whole industry with Utility Week. I’ve summarised my top 3 take aways and some ideas sparked 💡 from conversations today that Baringa want to progress: 1) Bold action is needed. The most critical first piece of the jigsaw is the top down SSEP (Strategic Spatial Energy Plan) as you can see in the picture our own Mike Wilks presented today. This top down plan will help us work out how we choose the what and where for the approx. 200GW of generation that we need for our 2050 net zero targets, from the current queue of about 700GW. BUT we need to do this whilst balancing with bottom up local plans.   💡 : Baringa would be keen to bring together industry for a discussion to define and bring to life what we need from this top down plan. What will and won’t it answer? What level of granularity is useful for different stakeholders? What breaks the plan? Watch this space…. 2) Developers are looking for transparency and queue visibility to enable collaboration. This could mean developers partnering via bilateral agreements for co-located demand and generation to potentially bring forwards connection dates. 3) The industry will be trying to rapidly implement connections reform in early 2025 (TMO4+). Networks want to understand the impacts of changes (e.g. Gate 2 & the Distributed Forecasted Capacity) to get on the front foot. 💡 : Baringa are keen to engage DNOs and TOs throughout the summer to understand the industries' readiness to implement reforms and bring to life the collective implementation challenges and potential solutions.
