🌊 Having trouble getting your child to swim? 🏊♂️ • Believe it or not, it’s not uncommon for children to refuse to swim after a series of swim lessons. While it’s important to focus on staying positive, it’s also important to consider additional factors that could have contributed to your child not enjoying the water. • Generally speaking, when children aren’t receiving instruction that is clear and tailored to their learning style, swimming can be incredibly difficult to learn. This makes parents (unknowingly) have unrealistic expectations of their retaining the water safety skills. • It’s essential that parents advocate for highly experienced coaches to teach their child to swim, as well as parents taking a leading role in enforcing what their children learn in swim lessons. By holding their children accountable for the skills that they worked hard on developing, through something as easy as play, parents will not only see their child’s confidence grow, but they will also see their child retain water safety skills learned in swim lessons. • Connecting it all together, is your child’s swim coach’s attitude towards coaching. A coach that is focused on your child retaining the skills they learn, will be open minded as well as open hearted. They will encourage a high level of communication so that your child can learn at a pace that best suits their cognitive, physical and emotional development. We really do need to seek out the availability of pools, which are under-utilised - and make them available. Insurance for renting pool space is often considered to be a barrier: but this really need not be an issue. Just ask... Lindy at BGi.uk.

SERGEANT PEPPER TAUGHT THE BAND TO PLAY While genuine credit and tribute should be paid to campaigners past and present…..  it is almost 30 years ago that National Curriculum legislation required Primary Schools to deliver a programme of study for Swimming. In 1994 there were no smartphones, we sent faxes; it was the year that Yahoo was founded. We backed up files on floppy disks. We recorded and watched stuff on VHS tapes and my kids were playing Donkey Kong! Yet, how  little change there has been since then in positions, discourses and conversations about School Swimming amongst policy makers and politicians and sector agencies I know because I was there at the time talking to PE Advisors and working with local schools. I have trawled through numerous Hansard and other parliamentary records and statements by MP’s Lords, NGB’s since then. “… lost souls, swimming in a fish bowl, Year after year, running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old….Wish you were here” (Pink Floyd) I have a copy of an Institute of Swimming Teachers and Coaches report, ‘Swim For Life- The Future of Swimming and Water Safety in the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 & 2’. Published around 1994- 96 It also drew on evidence generated by several reputable research studies. The concluding statements when read today should sound of their time, like distant echoes or dusty relics of earlier days. You decide.. From the evidence considered in the survey and referencing a number of well respected sources, the picture that emerged was “... of a subject that is absolutely vital.” However, they noted “it is time consuming, heavily dependent on external support for its funding and delivery and …. there are largely neither the on-site facilities nor the qualified staff to enable it to be fitted easily into the schools timetable.”  “In these circumstances how are schools managing to continue to deliver swimming and water safety as a curriculum subject?” “The evidence is not encouraging……” “…there are growing signs that some schools are taking the minimum distance of 25 metres as a definition of the extent of their teaching commitment….” “…it is generally accepted that to use the ability to swim 25m as a definition of the ability to swim is highly dangerous” ….” most schools that taught swimming and water safety before the National Curriculum expected children to be able to swim at least 100 metres before they left primary school”. Within the current programme of study (introduced in 1994) …” reference to swimming is mostly specific, the reference to water safety is more general and open to potential confusion.” Contact me for a fuller copy of this with footnotes and references
