In the 90s, making films was all about the "actor". If you had a Will Smith or a Tom Hanks, your movie would be a smash hit! 2000s turned to IP's - Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, X-Men, Spider-Man. 2010s - Franchises (remakes, sequels, spin-offs) - Mission Impossible, Marvel, Fast and the Furious. Here at the early point of the 2020s, aided by the pandemic and lack of creativity from an oversaturation of remakes and sequels, along with the ever-growing libraries that are available to watch, films have just kind of shut down. I'll be interested to see what defines this decade of films and how the entertainment industry will respond to the uphill battle it's currently facing. My prediction - I fully expect to see us circle back to the 90s with cheaper, original, and more story driven content where the actors will once again get to really shine (instead of their stunt doubles).

#Hollywood's cinematic universes are facing challenges. DC Comics has reset its #franchise for James Gunn's "Superman: Legacy," while Marvel Studios grapples with #streaming failures and #boxoffice letdowns. In this uncertain phase, only two loosely related franchise films, The Walt Disney Company's "Deadpool 3" and Warner Bros.' "Joker: Folie à Deux," are set for 2024 release. Sony Pictures Entertainment, after some release date adjustments post-strike, leads this year's superhero genre with three upcoming films. Differently from Disney and Warner Bros. Entertainment, Sony isn't framing its movies as parts of a long-term narrative structure. Sony has downplayed the interconnectedness of its superhero movies, focusing more on Spider-Man-related characters. Starting with 2018's hit "Venom," a comedic origin story, which grossed over $850 million, Sony is now set for its busiest year in the superhero genre. This includes two origin stories, "Madame Web" set for Valentine's Day, "Kraven the Hunter" following in August, and "Venom 3" in November, each marketed as standalone films with unique styles and no need for franchise background knowledge. Sony's spin-offs beyond the "Spider-Verse" haven't won much critical acclaim but have been commercial successes, partly due to lower production costs compared to Warner Bros. and Disney's $200+ million budgets. - "Madame Web" was produced for under $100 million, "Kraven" slightly above that but under the reported $130 million, and "Venom 3" costs just a bit more than its $110 million predecessor. Will Wolverine and Deadpool ignite Marvel's comeback? Superheroes abound in Disney's Marvel franchise, but it urgently needs to be saved. Historically, one could count on superheroes like Spider-Man, Thor, Hulk, or the Avengers team to come through for the win. But in the wake of the much-discussed decline at the studio, Marvel is going through unusual times. Therefore, it's a good thing that Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, has fully entered the fold with Hugh Jackman, an Australian, who may now reprise his legendary role as the late metal-clawed Wolverine, thanks to the creative delights of the Marvel multiverse (parallel universes of different realities). For The Atlantic, Shirley Li with a great article about the summer movie season. 'Until these perceptions change, though, this summer will appear to be a strange one, an anomalous dip caused by months of low earnings that haven’t encouraged general audiences to head to theaters on a regular basis. In the meantime, the industry is trying to manipulate so many variables—which actors could become box-office draws, which franchises aren’t experiencing fatigue, which projects should stream rather than play in theaters, which dates might be most appealing for release—but no individual movie will cure Hollywood’s box-office blues. Instead, Dergarabedian Comscore, Inc. said, “Stability is key … Every piece of this puzzle relies on the other.” The moviegoing experience itself needs to be routinely appealing to be lucrative—and a meme-worthy popcorn bucket or film-title portmanteau will only stoke interest for so long. While consumer habits evolve over time, the storytelling and characters continue to resonate across generations. Movies and merchandising are currently in vogue, as print media seems to be losing its appeal due to high production costs and a change in the format of how content is consumed. There are many uncertainties, such as whether film production will become too expensive in its current form, if Manga/Anime will capture more market share, the influence of politics and culture on existing storylines, and how AI-Web3 will impact creative compensation. Another place of posts I look forward to here on LinkedIn are the posts of Shawn Robbins, who I have found to be measured, analytical and balanced in his views. (I will make a video post on the people I watch here on the platform at some stage soon) Speaking about the latest Marvel Studios The Walt Disney Studios The Walt Disney Company offering 'The Marvels', I found there were a lot of comments on the post that was almost celebrating Marvel/Disney's failure to attract an audience for this movie. I commented the following: "I am going to add an opinion here that may not be too popular. I have a feeling of great sadness and loss that a movie style and franchise had sunk so low in the opinions of even its core audience. This is not a time for a "I told you so" moment, more a lesson on our own creative egos and how to keep ourselves in check rather than spitting acid at executives at studios trying a make 'more than' a buck or two. What does this mean for cinema and multiplexes trying to have an attractive offering for customers?
