Helping leaders build visibility to build their business. Executive Communications - PR Strategy - Media Prep & Training
If you’re a job seeker or know someone who is: Here’s a reminder to keep that role on your resume – even if it’s not directly related to your profession. Early in my career and with very limited experience, I began looking for a new position in corporate communications. I still listed college positions on my resume: my internship working in PR for a museum, and the job I held for every summer and winter break for four years: sales associate at Nordstrom. My resume was barely a page. I was approaching the final stages with one employer; the last step was an interview with the senior vice president. When I shook his hand and sat down in his office, he said something surprising: “I don’t have any questions for you today.” I asked him what that meant, and if it was a good or bad thing. “I see Nordstrom on your resume. They do an excellent job training their employees and instilling strong values around service. Everyone we’ve hired with a Nordstrom background has done very well here, and I’m sure you will too.” I got the job and had a great career with that organization for many years. On the surface, that job in retail had nothing to do with the corporate communications role I was trying to land. But it had *everything* to do with building a great foundation in the skills that were important in that role, particularly non-technical attributes like flexibility, a positive attitude, eagerness to learn and the ability to think on your feet (while standing on them for many hours a day)! When I advise recent grads at my alma mater UC Santa Barbara – many of whom have limited professional experience like I did – I share this story and tell them not to discount experience in retail, food service or hospitality. Every role builds character and skills! And great employers understand this. What college job gave you a great foundation for your career? #jobs #communications #jobinterviews #hiring

Last summer, amidst my studies, I found myself in need of a job to support myself. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I applied for a position in a shoe shop, despite having no prior experience in retail. Little did I know, this leap of faith would shape my summer into a transformative experience. Walking into the interview, I faced questions about my sales experience. Honestly, I admitted that I hadn't sold products before, but emphasized my strong background in customer service. The interviewer's concern about my commerce skills was met with my unwavering confidence in my ability to adapt and learn. I firmly believed that with determination, anyone can thrive in a new role. Fast forward to spending my summer at the shoe shop, every day was a learning curve. I embraced the challenge of assisting customers in finding the perfect pair of shoes. With each interaction, I honed my sales techniques and navigated various customer preferences. It wasn't always easy, but my dedication paid off as I witnessed a notable increase in sales during my tenure. As the summer came to a close, so did my contract with the shoe shop. However, destiny had other plans. Two months later, the very person who had interviewed me reached out with a job offer. It was a testament to the impact I had made during my time there. Regrettably, I was abroad at the time and couldn't accept the offer. Nevertheless, it served as validation of my growth and accomplishments in a field I had never imagined myself in. Looking back, this journey taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the power of seizing opportunities. It reinforced the belief that with determination and a willingness to learn, one can overcome any challenge, no matter how daunting it may seem. Here's to embracing the unknown, taking chances, and discovering our true potential along the way! ✨ #PersonalGrowth #CareerJourney #OpportunityKnock #Resume #Experience #Openforwork

🚀 Accelerate your career in 90 days as a peak performer to fast track your dream job, growth and income | 7-figure CEO and Career Coach 🏆 870K+ learners | Forbes Coaches Council | $3M+ client raises | Ex-L'Oréal
As a former Senior Director at L'Oréal, here's 5 of my best practices that led me to accelerate my career and land 7 promotions in under 10 years. #𝟭: 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻. I stopped being reactive in hoping my work would speak for itself, and replaced that with proactivity and intentional strategy. For example, I didn’t look at internal promotion timelines as an end all. Rather, I used it as fuel to learn what I needed to do to get there sooner than later and mastered that approach. #𝟮: 𝗦𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲. When you’re faced with obstacles at work, you can either let them overcome you or you can overcome them. I chose option 2. For example, when my boss went on maternity leave without a replacement, I didn't have a direct boss for over 6 months. Instead of seeing this as a challenge that would get the best of me, I used it to step up, show my readiness for growth and collapsed the reporting lines with my senior leaders. This paid off big time in landing my next promotion. #𝟯: 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻. 𝗕𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲. If you’re relying on your boss to do all the heavy lifting for you in driving your promotions, you’re in for a rude awakening. You need to show up for yourself in everything that you do and identify moments to showcase this consistently. This is your career to take control of so don’t stay in the passenger seat. #𝟰: 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝘃𝘀. 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄. Instead of having ambiguity around what's needed to take on that next level-role, take action to learn where the gaps are and close them. This can be done with a simple example of speaking to people already in that role and cross-referencing it with where you’re at in terms of your own skills and competencies. #𝟱: 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺. Relationships, relationships, relationships. This is your #1 currency in your career and something that is too often neglected in lieu of doing good work and thinking that’s enough. It’s not. The weight that people have and will continue to have in your career advancement is crucial. Don't disregard this. 👇 Be sure to check out my FREE #linkedinlearning nano-course called 𝗡𝗮𝗻𝗼 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿! https://vist.ly/pj9z It's just 11 minutes long and value-packed to change the game for you. ☀ Can a summer job pave the way for long-term career success? According to Courtney Moed-Melendez, Account Lead at Hot Paper Lantern, it certainly can. She details how her summer job at a supermarket helped prepare her to become the communications professional she is today. 😁 "Keep a positive outlook. You never know how your conversation with a customer will go. Sometimes you’ll have the nicest customers and other times you’ll have people being rude to you. Just keep a positive mindset and don’t take it personally. Keep it moving and get onto the next customer." 🤝 "Always be approachable. It is important to make customers feel seen – they’re humans too. I’d always communicate with the customers I was checking out and be as friendly as possible. Sometimes I’d even have regulars who would rather wait on my line than go to another person’s register." ✅ "Do your due diligence. When checking customers out at the grocery store, I’d always look ahead on the belt to see what items they had and how I could pack them together. When being a cashier and communications professional, it is always important to think ahead on how you’re going to plan things out." 💬 What was your first summer job? Marketing Recruiter with Aquent Talent💄🛍️ Now Hiring Latinx Marketing talent in Tech, Beauty, and Retail📱👩🏻💻
Appreciation Post!!! 🎉 Today, I want to take a moment to express my thanks to the people who have played an instrumental role in shaping my professional career. It's easy to get caught up in the daily grind and forget the people who have given us a chance or offered support during difficult moments in our career journey. I am truly grateful for those who have believed in me and advocated for my success. Nyk Robertson: You helped me transition into Starbucks, launching my 5-year career with them. Prior to that, I was working in an artist role with no potential for growth. However, you saw my potential and helped me launch my management career. I also miss the crazy days in Boston when we had lines of customers down Faneuil Hall, but we were always able to handle them with a smile on our faces! Nickie Cerda: When we first met, I wanted so badly to rekindle my passion for artistry. I missed being creative every day, and you were the one who believed in me. You helped kickstart my career in beauty retail with NYX Professional Makeup, and I truly appreciated your support. I also loved that you had so much faith in me that you brought me along on our start-up journey with Riley Rose x F21. To even launch a 6K square foot store from ground zero! Learning about the brands was the most fun part of the journey!! Those were some unforgettable days, and I really miss them! Finally...Last but not the very least... Nora Merecicky: Thank you for being there for me during my biggest career transition, when I moved from working in beauty retail malls to becoming an agency recruiter. I went through several rounds of interviews and Nora at Vitamin T gave me a shot. Thank you for your training, guidance, and faith in me! I want to give a special shout-out to the hiring managers out there who are the movers and shakers of the industry. Your willingness to take a chance on someone and provide guidance has a ripple effect on their career trajectory. Let's take a moment to reflect on the people who have helped us along the way and express our thanks. Together, we can continue to uplift and support each other in our professional journeys. #appreciationpost #grateful #professionaldevelopment

Experienced Luxury Fashion Specialist | Expertise in Store Openings, Pop-Up Operations, and Fashion Recruitment | Available for Project Support
"Embracing Versatility: Navigating a Career Path from Job-Hopping to Success" I've navigated through diverse career paths that have intricately woven my professional journey. Starting as a waitress in a vibrant nightclub, then transitioning into roles like Sales Associate in a chic clothing store, and venturing into the realm of Events Planning before my tenure in Luxury Retail—my career trajectory boasts a rich tapestry. These varied experiences led me to my current role as a committed Talent Partner in a well-regarded recruitment agency. Reflecting on my journey, I recognize how each career choice has been a stepping stone to my present position. While some may perceive individuals who explore different roles as "job-hoppers" and question their commitment, my current perspective as a Talent Partner challenges this notion. Far from being mere quitters, these individuals possess the valuable skill of discernment. They can quickly recognize when a role doesn't align with their aspirations. Job-hoppers are, in essence, risk-takers. Their willingness to explore diverse opportunities reflects thoughtfulness and a commitment to finding what genuinely resonates with them—an aspect I resonate with personally. Each unique role has equipped me with distinctive skills, contributing significantly to my success as a Talent Partner today. The assumption that all job-hoppers lack qualifications is a generalization; in reality, job-hopping often means accumulating a wealth of experience before formal qualifications. Let's refrain from hastily dismissing those with diverse professional histories. Embracing varied experiences could unveil some of the most exceptional talents for our recruitment agency. Overlooking candidates due to their unconventional journey might mean missing out on valuable contributions to our team. #CareerJourney #DiverseExperiences #TalentSpotlight
