The Tuxca Denomination of Origin, or How to Destroy the Traditional
Mezcals of Southern Jalisco
The first time when I visited Zapotitlán de Vadillo in southern Jalisco, I had the opportunity attending one of the first tasting of mezcal at the Casa de la Cultura of this municipality and, met the different traditional producers of “vino mezcal” as they call it. Those producers and their families who became in my close friends, have worked hard to promulgate the quality, history, and legacy of southern Jalisco’s traditional mezcals.
I have followed the hard work and strong commitment of traditional producers to the defense, promotion, and protection of this important biocultural heritage and now, they are fighting against bottlers and investors that now are trying to control and capture this segment of the agave spirits market in any way they can, by using the image and name of traditional producers to promote a new Denomination of Origin that was not being demanded nor sought by the traditional producers.
By the above, the producers and their families decided to publish the following communique (both Spanish and English) seeking support against this attempt of spoliation, and requesting for your signature of support.
