New Research Hub for Robotic Enabled Sustainable Circular Manufacturing & Materials   The establishment of the £34.6M EPSRC Manufacturing Research Hub in Robotics, Automation & Smart Machine Enabled Sustainable Circular Manufacturing & Materials (RESCu-M2) at the University of Birmingham marks an important step forward in the transition to a more sustainable manufacturing ecosystem. Two aims of the hub are: - Transforming the sustainable use of critical materials - Improving the productivity of ‘Re-X’ manufacturing processes.   So-called Re-X processes include reuse, repurpose, repair, remanufacture and recycle. These processes are currently much more labour-intensive than traditional manufacturing, resulting in many materials being disposed of. By harnessing advances in AI and intelligent automation, this national research hub aims to promote cost-effective circular resource use and prolong the useful life of products containing critical materials.   This focus on sustainable manufacturing practices is not only vital for reducing waste and environmental impact here on Earth, but also has significant implications for space exploration and habitation. As humanity looks to establish a long-term presence on the Moon, Mars, and beyond, the ability to manufacture and maintain equipment using limited resources will be crucial.   The technologies and processes developed through RESCu-M2, such as robotic remanufacturing, repair, and recycling, are directly transferable to the space sector. By enabling the reuse and repurposing of materials and components, these techniques can help minimize the need for resources.   Moreover, the autonomous and intelligent nature of these robotic systems makes them well-suited for operation in the harsh and remote environments of space. They can work tirelessly to maintain and repair equipment, ensuring the longevity and reliability of critical infrastructure.   One exciting application of sustainable robot manufacturing in space is the potential to reuse and repurpose materials and equipment brought to the Moon and other planets. For example, rovers and other vehicles that have reached the end of their original mission life could be disassembled by robots and their components reused in the construction of new equipment. This approach would not only reduce waste but also minimize the need for new materials to be transported from Earth. 📢 Q4 2023 sustainability highlight - The ABB Accelerating Circularity Start Up Challenge Our Motion and Electrification businesses set out to find customer solutions that design out waste and pollution and keep products and materials in use for as long as possible. More than 100 startups from around the world participated, the three winners received $30,000 each to develop their concepts in collaboration with ABB. The winners included Molg from the United Sates who are currently working on the development of robotic micro factories that specialize in assembling and disassembling electronic products. Minespider from Switzerland won for their design of a reliable circularity certificate management tool. Lastly, Excess Materials Exchange from the Netherlands won for their digital platform designed to generate value from Power Distribution End-of-Life. Renault car manufacturer announced yesterday an ambitious plan to transform its industrial base.   Digitalization is the key part of this plan, and the ambition is high! Not less than -       Cutting cost of production down from 30 to 50% -       Cutting delivery time by 60% -       Boosting agility and flexibility of operations -       Increasing the speed of development of a new model   Multiple projects involving design, manufacturing, QC, supply chain are necessary to make such a major shift. Ambition is not less than reinvent vehicle production !   I am a Renault fan 😎 I was one of the first having a Megane E-Tech , first of their new electric car platform, and I love it! 😎   I work in Process Industry, providing technologies widely used in processing of food ingredients and biobased alternative to petroleum derived product. I can see strong similarities between Renault ambition and what our industry in going through.   At Applexion also, we see digitalization as fundamentally changing the industry.
