Our joint project, "Towards Acceleration and Demonstration of E-Methanol" (TANDEM), received a total of nearly €4 million subsidy, covering half of the total €8 million investment.  This groundbreaking project is at the forefront of E-Methanol technology development, offering a green alternative fuel for heavy-duty transportation sectors such as the maritime and aviation sectors. The project has a total duration of four years. 🔋🌍 Significant Breakthroughs in Sustainable Hydrogen! 🌍🔋 Exciting times for the hydrogen space as Greenstat ASA has begun constructing a 20-MW green hydrogen production plant in Rogaland county, Western Norway. This project is set to revolutionize green hydrogen production in the region. 🌱🚀 Greenstat foresees the facility producing up to eight tonnes of green hydrogen daily. The construction at Fiska will take about two years, with the first hydrogen expected by the end of 2026. EDIT: I promise to my readers that I fix things that I miss or get wrong, and here's a case in point. First problem: CO2 is recovered from an incineration/cogen plant "fired with household waste and forest residue"- so the feed CO2 will contain quite a bit of fossil carbon from the plastic in that municipal waste. EDIT: the footnotes of the press release say that the new plant plans to capture 77,000 tonnes/yr of CO2 and permanently store it, to offset the fossil content of the waste it burns. So while that from an economics perspective will be troublesome, and there's no indication of where the CO2 will be permanently geologically sequestered, that should take care of my 1st problem with the project! Second problem: wasting a feedstock's enthalpy by burning it, then capturing the resulting CO2 to lugubriousy chemically reduce it back to a fuel, rather than gasifying that same feedstock and thereby capturing some of its enthalpy. Green hydrogen is more expensive, obviously, than the electricity it is made FROM, so it makes zero sense to burn waste to make electricity, then turn a small fraction of the energy value in that electricity, into another fuel- even if you use the excuse of "cogen", i.e. heat recovery. EDIT: So this one gets FULL marks, on the Drake meme rating. It's making the right bet- methanol for ships is the best decarbonization option until batteries improve by another order of magnitude in cost- but the wrong bet, i.e. on CCS, and on the notion that green hydrogen is cheap enough to waste in inefficient chemical conversions of CO2 to fuels- especially when the feedstock contains chemical energy in the first place that is going to waste! But that's an economic concern rather than one of GHG emissions- so if the customers who will buy this methanol are willing to pay it, I'm good with that!

It was recently announced by the 260MW green hydrogen-to-methanol project, that they have named thyssenkrupp nucera as their preferred electrolyser supplier. This project will be based in Tasmania, in Australia. This innovative new project has set out its aim to create 300,000 tonnes of green methanol from green hydrogen every year. Imagine a carbon-free future in Shipping, with the only emission being water vapour. South Australia is leading the charge with the ALP Malinauskas State Government's Green Hydrogen initiative in Whyalla. This initiative aims to build the world's largest Green Hydrogen production facilities and derivatives, such as Green Methanol and Green Ammonia. Whyalla, the Coastal City, is the gateway to the Eyre Peninsula, boasting over 2,400km of stunning coastline and a landmass more extraordinary than the entire United Kingdom. MAN ship engines are set to power over 50% of the world's shipping fleet, replacing polluting diesel engines with sustainable alternatives for a carbon-free future. Not far from Whyalla lies Port Bonython, which is equipped with a deep-sea export terminal for LNG. This terminal can be swiftly adapted for shipping Green Methanol globally, addressing Australia's national security concerns by reducing dependence on imported Diesel Fuel. The State Government of South Australia's plans could lead to ceasing subsidies on imported Diesel Fuel for the Mining, Transportation, and Farming sectors this year. These subsidies total over $11 billion annually, marking a significant step towards sustainability. South Australia's status as a renewable energy "superpower" is solidified by its vast availability of Renewable off-peak electricity, enabling the production of Green Hydrogen, Green Ammonia, and Green Methanol. The construction of the Green Spine, a multi-billion dollar 330kV transmission line connecting Victoria and NSW, enhances the National Grid's capacity to offer cost-effective off-peak electricity for scalable Green Hydrogen production facilities. Together, these initiatives pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future. Electrochaea and Erik Thun Group have announced negotiations for the off-take of e-methane to be utilized as green marine fuel. This collaboration marks a pivotal move towards reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry. Electrochaea, through its subsidiary BioCAT Roslev Aps in Denmark, is set to produce e-methane utilizing its patented bio-methanation technology. The process involves the use of renewable power from wind to produce green hydrogen, which is then combined with CO2 from biogas production to generate e-methane. This eco-friendly fuel will be integrated into the Danish gas grid, contributing to the decarbonization efforts across Europe. Erik Thun AB, a leading shipping company, intends to utilize e-methane to replace fossil-based LNG fuel in its vessels. This strategic shift aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability and its endeavor to lead the transition towards renewable fuels in the maritime sector. Key in the utilisation of hydrogen-based fuels and scarce renewable carbon resources in specific parts of the transport system and industry requires a scale of investment beyond the traditional willingness of the public sector. To succeed, a reduction in uncertainty and achievement of cost parity between alternative green and fossil fuels, is needed. This involves: • A clear and stable path as to which fuels besides direct electrification to target, which preferably is already global commodity e.g. Hydrogen, Ammonia, Methanol and biooil. • Drastically increasing the availability of green hydrogen as well as increasing its utilisation both directly and as a basis for production of green fuels. Stena focuses on future fuels to cut emissions Stena Group is using methanol and biofuels in its roro ships and electrifying ferries while in port to cut its greenhouse gas emissions Stena Rederi technical director Ron Gerlach said the group has extended shore power to ferries across the network as part of its decarbonisation strategy. Future roro ships will have hybrid propulsion with larger battery packs, he said at Riviera Maritime Media’s Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference 2023 in Bergen, Norway. Stena is also using digitalisation to improve operational efficiency on its ferries and roro ships, by monitoring freight flows and demand for its vessels, then adjusting schedules accordingly. Mr. Gerlach said ship navigation has been improved by using artificial intelligence and weather routeing. “We are very much focused on future fuels and operational efficiency,” he said. “We have looked into using sails on board and developed AI pilot for guiding support to our captains, based on weather routeing systems and how ships perform in various sea states.” “Methanol offers the flexibility to mix blue and green into the grey methanol to stay within compliance and make sure we keep our ships operating,” he said. “Methanol is our focus, as is electrification.” Stena was a pioneer in adopting methanol, converting the first ship in 2014.
