It was a special treat to bring this to life across our social and digital channels in real-time with millions of viewers tuning into the live stream ⭐️ We took over the city of Portland. What an incredible few days with such a tremendous turnout for the first Rockstar Energy Open! It was great to see the brand all over the city as some of the world’s best skateboarders gathered for the contest. The weekend was packed with community, music performances and more. #pepsicoproud

I lived in, and love, Portland, and it was great to see skateboarders take over Tom McCall Waterfront Park last weekend for the inaugural Rockstar Energy Open. Portland has deep, historic roots in the skateboarding community, and the competition featured both gold medalists and street skaters. It felt like the best of PDX, the whole town came out to celebrate, and you could see that energy in the spectators, the music venues, and the long lines to enter. The Rockstar Design team created the visual identity of the Open, and I was especially impressed with how they used their skateboarding experience to create the look of the course. They didn’t just know the culture, they’re a part of it. They were able to unify the skaters, the city, and the event in a bold way, setting a new standard for future Rockstar competitions. Being part of a “first” is always exciting, and my designers created something completely new while taking inspiration from skateboarding iconography and culture. The design choices complemented but never distracted from the competition, and translated perfectly to the graphics, trophies, social, and even our Rockstar skateboard decks. We put a lot of work in with the event team to create the skatepark, and the surrounding Rockstar Energy Open Culture Village, a little city-within-a-city of gold, black, and sand on the Willamette River. Also loved seeing the illustrated roses on the course as the skaters competed, it was a fitting tribute to the Rose City. A big thanks to my team for bringing their passion for skate. And for amazing work, including creative direction from Adam G. Wells and Eli Roe, digital and social from Eva Rodriguez and Sam Flynn, great motion design from Brent French, and video from Aaron Snyder. Plus excellent event/experience marketing by Nicole Tomeo and Jordan Kosta, brand marketing from Cody Berg, MBA and Taylor McGinnis, and superlative leadership and partnership execution from Sean Bonthuys, Yumna Bahgat, Steve Mateus, Jennifer Kalban, and Callie Wortmann.
