Biomedical Engineering @ Yale

Biomedical engineering has been such a key part of my Yale experience. Thank you Yale School of Engineering & Applied Science and Steven Geringer for this spotlight and covering my story further at https://lnkd.in/giEtBDu5. My sincere gratitude goes to the professors who have mentored and supported me along this journey - Drs. Stuart Campbell, D. S. Fahmeed Hyder, James Duncan, Lawrence Staib, Mark Saltzman, and Vince Wilczynski.

#YaleEngineers: Entering Yale as a Yale Engineering & Science Scholar in 2021, Yusuf Rasheed was immediately drawn to the research of the Biomedical Engineering department. After taking the Physiological Systems course taught by Prof. Stuart Campbell, he was fascinated with the heart and wanted to learn more, eventually joining Campbell’s Integrative Cardiac Biomechanics Laboratory. Over the past two years, he worked with engineered heart tissues to evaluate a novel diagnostic tool for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a disease where the walls of the heart thicken, obstructing blood flow. He hopes his work will serve as the foundation for improved diagnosis for all HCM patients. Yusuf has also been focused on the BME community, serving as the President of the Biomedical Engineering Society . In this capacity, he represented the 100+ BME undergraduate students at Yale, supporting their career development and fostering friendships through panels, a mentorship program, game nights, and speaker events. He also founded the Yale Biomedical Engineering Conference , bringing together 150+ students from 15+ universities to Yale’s campus for a weekend of innovation and networking through a Career Fair, Research Symposium, and Post-Graduate Panels. Spearheading the conference is the accomplishment he is most proud of during his time at Yale because of the impact it left on the participants, from finding jobs at biotech companies to being inspired to pursue graduate degrees. For his academic and community contributions, Yusuf was awarded the Yale Science and Engineering Association, Inc.’s Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement. Outside of BME, Yusuf has served as President of the Yale Muslim Students Association, a second home for him on campus. He has also developed his passion for scientific storytelling as a Senior Staff Writer at the Yale Scientific Magazine, the nation’s oldest college science publication. This summer, after graduating in just 3 years, Yusuf will be studying global health and filmmaking in South Africa while scuba diving with great white sharks. He plans to return to campus this fall to pursue his interests in BME for a year before attending medical school. #yaleengineering #yale #biomedicalengineering #studentsuccess #yale2024
