Train PhD students to be thinkers, not just specialists "Under pressure to turn out productive lab members quickly, many PhD programmes in the biomedical sciences have shortened their courses, squeezing out opportunities for putting research into its wider context. Consequently, most PhD curricula are unlikely to nurture the big thinkers and creative problem-solvers that society needs. "That means students are taught every detail of a microbe’s life cycle but little about the life scientific. They need to be taught to recognize how errors can occur. Trainees should evaluate case studies derived from flawed real research, or use interdisciplinary detective games to find logical fallacies in the literature. The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is investing $50 million in 15 collaborative research projects through its Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials (PREM) program to enhance access and participation in materials science. This significant funding includes over $4 million each for 11 partnering institutions over six years and $1 million in seed funding to four additional institutions over three years. The aim is to broaden participation in materials science by supporting partnerships between minority-serving institutions and research-intensive centers. At Xavier University of Louisiana, the NSF funding will be used to support K-12 academic enrichment programs in materials science and to create pathways for Xavier undergraduates to pursue doctoral degrees in materials science and engineering. This partnership with the NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center at the University of Chicago focuses on developing new composite materials, particularly for high-energy-density battery systems. This graph depicts the heightened competition within today's biomedical academia. Despite a continual increase in PhDs and R01 applications, NIH funding has plateaued since 2003. Addressing this requires two approaches: 1) Academia should diversify funding sources. 2) Postdocs should consider timely transitions, given the PhD oversaturation. While universities tackle the first solution, it is not entirely in their interest to contemplate on the second solution. Many postdocs rightly anticipate challenges when transitioning to a new industry career but often underestimate the hurdles of staying in academia and securing a tenured faculty position in the current funding climate. This can lead to a cycle of temporary academic work or multiple postdocs. Therefore, for your next conference, skip the Grant Funding Roundtable and join a Career Roundtable. Engage with both new and experienced faculty to gain insights into the real trajectory of your postdoctoral career.
