Future outlook: 5 key clinical trial trends in 2024 🧬 As we approach the end of the year it’s time to reflect and look ahead to what’s to come in 2024. Here are 5 key trends that will be important for clinical trials in 2024: 👉 Centralised -> Decentralised The past 3 years have seen an industry-wide shift from centralised to decentralised and hybrid clinical trials with more and more study procedures taking place outside of the clinic. It’s likely this transformation continues as tools such as ePRO and eConsent are adopted by sponsors and CROs worldwide. 👉 Sponsor-centric -> Patient-centric Patient-centricity remains a key theme for the industry. Notable TransCelerate initiatives such as the Participant Data Return initiative, the Patient Protocol Engagement toolkit (P-PET), the Study Participant Feedback Questionnaire (SPFQ), and the Gratitude toolkit (GRAT) indicate a promising shift from sponsor-centric to patient-centric clinical research. 👉 Labour-driven (manual) -> Tech-driven (automated) Increasingly digital and decentralised clinical trials continue to fuel automation of manual and duplicate tasks. This is a most welcome shift for clinical trial sites, which are often heavily overburdened and now have more spare time left to spend on their most important priority: the patient. 👉 Data management -> Data science & clinical informatics Data from historical clinical trials and RWD sources is increasingly being utilised to inform future study designs, planning, and feasibility research. Notably, historic data has also become more and more relevant in evidence generation—for instance in the case of external control arms for rare and life-threatening diseases. 👉 Traditional medicine -> Personalised medicine Advancements in data science & technology have allowed us to get a much richer understanding of the patient’s condition, including identifying patient subgroups based on specific biomarkers and genetic profiles. Paired with the rise of novel trial designs such as umbrella and basked protocols, these advancements are likely to drive increasingly ambitious and personalised drug development strategies.
