This is an amazing video highlighting how leaders can approach situations where difficult conversations are required. How did he do it? 1. He approached the situation with respect, he didn't call out Kobe publicly. 2. He asked for trust among the other team members and reassured them he would handle the situation. 3. In starting the conversation, he used video review. This is an amazing way to focus on the action and not on the person. It allows for objective feedback to be anchored on the action in question. 4. He called out the issue and inspired change by providing Kobe with what he needed from him and linked it to the team's goal, "We need you taking Olympic shots to win a gold medal". Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone and break the status quo? Leaders understand that the status quo is incompatible with progress, growth, and leadership. In my experience, one of the status quo mindsets I've heard is that we can't confront our top performers. It sounds like: "This is just the way they are." And "They're too important. If we confront them, they'll leave, and the business will lose." Unfortunately, this disenchants good team members, erodes a culture of accountability, and the business loses anyway. Coach K's willingness to exhort Kobe for his momentary poor performance made Kobe better, it built the relationship and made the team stronger. Where do you need to step out of your comfort zone to make your team stronger? A final note, if the "Kobe" on your team responds differently, they're probably on the wrong team.
