It was a privilege to attend a Breakthrough Energy summit in London this week. A lot of ground has been covered over the two days. It's clear that we've made tremendous progress in lowering emissions, but a lot more hard work lies ahead. I listened to and spoke with many people from companies working on superconductors, long-duration energy storage, fusion advocacy, using AI to optimise grids, reducing emissions in mining, and many other areas. Speed, innovative thinking, and hard work were repeatedly highlighted as key to future success. Google's own initiatives, such as tools like CFE Manager, Clean Transition Tariff (announced just last week by our innovative US team), AMC, and TEACs, were also mentioned frequently.

Activate Fellow company Fervo Energy (Tim Latimer and Jack Norbeck, Cohort 2018) is a great example of how early-stage funding can lead to rapid success. Fervo is pioneering a new approach to next-generation geothermal with advanced drilling techniques, fiber-optic sensing, and cloud-based analytics. In August 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) selected Fervo to establish the Red Rocks DAC Hub in southwest Utah, where more than 10 gigawatts of high-quality, economically exploitable geothermal resources could translate into a storage potential of up to 100M tons of CO₂ annually. At the end of last year, Fervo launched a first-of-its-kind geothermal power project supplying carbon-free electricity to Google data centers in Nevada.
