Tlatenchi House of Culture | Public Architecture | Mexico Project Background: The House of Culture and the Children's Garden (CADI) Tlatenchi are two projects that were developed collaboratively but in distinct locations known as "residual lots." When addressing the formation of public places, it is critical to go beyond set limitations and, in this case, concentrate on producing intersections, concentration, and meaning. Tlatenchi is a community in Morelos that is part of the municipality of Jojutla. Because both projects are integrated into a housing context, one of the design premises was to maintain coherence between them, despite the fact that they are only a 5-minute walk apart. Spatial design and Features: The use of homogeneous materials in terms of color, arrangement, and structural solutions through a system of Catalan vaults was used to achieve integration of the landscape and structures, allowing both to be regarded as a unified organism. The natural flows that inhabitants used to have between one street and another were considered in both cases, which entailed reintroducing the original street formed by the former use route, the natural crossing. The concentration of people in these spaces created a node point in each center, which translated into an auditorium and a terrace in the House of Culture. The current use of the brick vault, which in modern architecture allows for the utilization of its structural functionality, versatility, and expressiveness, was a vital aspect. This technology, which local artisans expertly grasp, was introduced to cover enormous expanses without the use of intermediary supports and to increase air circulation within the rooms. In terms of building, the exposed load-bearing walls serve as the structural system's foundation. These walls were built using extruded brick, while the vaults were built with mud brick. The materials are carried through to the courtyards, staircases, and walkways, which are paved with well-known clay tiles. Genuine citizen participation generates important presences and forces that convert these places into habitats of encounter and active participation that extend beyond physical structures. This vision enables them to be viewed as the focal point of a larger sphere of activity. #architecture #design #publicspace #publicrealm #architecturedesign #urbanism #archdaily
