By combining Steps 1 & 2, you can have a 2 step process without losing your data points for making a well-informed decision. This process works for Remote, Hybrid or On-Site. Well, let's look at some stats from a recently completed search: Contacted - 112 * Engaged - 33 Recruited - 11 Assessed - 8 ** Interviewed by client - 2 Successfully hired - one happy candidate 🤝 * up to 11 points of contact per person - six emails, five phonecalls, Twitter/Linkedin/Telegram to fill gaps as required ** 2-3hr performance-based interview with me, plus ancillary screening and scoring Time to fill (agreement signed to offer accepted) - 69 days It's an incredible amount of work. Now, is every hiring process this exhaustive? No - and it doesn't need to be. But if you're going for a low volume, high leverage hiring strategy - like most discerning post-seed teams - this is broadly what it should look like. Forecast out the second- and third-order effects of raising your hiring average from, say, the 60th to the 80th percentile. You'll invariably find them to be dramatic, most especially at the earliest stages of your project's lifecycle. Hire people who are smarter than you. When I worked on Wall Street, my boss wanted me to hire somebody. We found this guy, a PhD in physics. Since I was not very senior to him, I felt intimidated and hesitant to hire him. I did anyway, and it turned out to be one of the smartest moves I ever made. I learned not to be afraid of having people work for you who are smarter than you. They make you better, they make the whole thing better. It's a mistake for your own career if you neglect to hire someone because they are smarter or better than you in some way. We ended up making a great team, saw eye to eye, and worked very well together. I could pick up what he was doing, and he could pick up what I was doing. In terms of output, these were some of my most productive years. And as a team, we developed some really good ideas and produced some great work. I was, and still am, very proud of the work we did.
