Marketers – What is Your ‘Why’?

Most of today’s marketing articles focus on ways in which the marketer can improve both their effectiveness and the amount of money they make while managing campaigns. Though it is difficult to determine exactly what percent of marketers eventually hit their income goals, and what percent fails, it is a lot easier to determine why some succeed and why some fail. Success in anything, especially business, comes down to taking the necessary actions required to achieve that which is envisioned, and not quitting when the going gets tough. All worthy endeavors inevitably meet with resistance and challenge, but only those who have a strong enough ‘why’ will succeed.

Everyone has heard stories about those who have overcome tremendous obstacles in order to achieve success. Such stories are usually accompanied by compelling reasons why the person was able to break through these obstacles. Perhaps they wanted to prove others wrong, help their families, or simply prove to themselves that they could do it. In performance marketing, a niche which can be extremely difficult to figure out and master, the best way for marketers to meet the success they desire is to have a strong ‘why’.

In order to determine the reasons you have entered into the field of performance marketing and develop the ‘why’ you need to succeed, take some time and ask yourself the following questions:

  • What about marketing truly interests you?
  • Do you find the challenges involved with performance marketing to be interesting and engaging or do they feel more like a burden or bother?
  • What strengths or talents do you have which make you uniquely suited to excel in this difficult field?
  • What ideas and talents do you have which will allow you to separate yourself from the pack?
  • What do you hope to get out of your performance marketing career? Do you hope to simply gain money, or are you looking to gain experience, fame, fortune, or do something extraordinary?

What you notice answering these questions should give you a better idea of exactly what you’re doing in your performance marketing career. Having a strong ‘why’, and reviewing it every day, can help make the difference between success and failure in this challenging arena. In performance marketing, it’s almost certain that you’ll get knocked down, several times, as various challenges are present to you. For example, a Google update that is beyond your control, accidentally getting banned from an ad platform, or any of a number of other misfortunes, can cause even the most seasoned marketer to question their resolve.

Having a strong ‘why’ will not only allow you to keep going when times get tough, but give you focus, and actually increase and accelerate your progress as a result of this focus. Keep doing what you want to do, and some day you will surely be doing it.
