Ascension Episcopal School Wins at Inaugural Fleur-de-lis Invitational Hosted by Kelly Gibson Foundation

ZACHARY, La. February 6, 2023 – The Kelly Gibson Foundation was proud to produce the Inaugural Fleur-de-lis Invitational junior golf tournament at Beaver Creek Golf Course in Zachary, La, on Saturday, February 4th to Sunday February 5th. This high school golf tournament included 80 girls and boys from 23 different high schools across Louisiana and Texas. The tournament format consisted of two competitions: individual and team. There was a girls individual format and boys individual format. The team competition consisted of nine teams of five boys each, representing their respective high schools. The four lowest scores of the five team members were calculated each day to determine the winning team. Teams that competed included Ascension Episcopal School, Catholic High School, Episcopal School of Acadiana, Loyola College Prep, Kelly High School, Sulphur High School, Saint Paul’s School, Mandeville High School and Holy Cross High School.

Ascension Episcopal School from Youngsville, La, took home first place in the team competition with an impressive team score of 1-under par for both days. Second place went to Catholic High School from Baton Rouge, La.

Leading the Ascension Episcopal School team to victory was Kale Fontenot, who captured the individual boys title with rounds of 65-69. Fellow teammate Jay Mendell took second place with solid rounds of 70-67.

On the girls side, Sophia Macias from Episcopal High School of Baton Rouge, La, was victorious and Samantha Schultz from Christ Episcopal School in Covington, La, was runner-up.

Final Results

In a post-tournament interview, Girls Individual Champion, Sophia Macias said that she was able to put out a lower score the second day of the tournament because of her “mental game and a lot less putts”. She adds that the new tournament “was amazing” and hopes to attend next year.

Coach John Mendell spoke on behalf of his Ascension Episcopal School golf team and said “we had a great week along with good competition. We had a solid team top to bottom with two seniors and the rest underclassmen playing”. His seniors, Kale Fontenot and Jay Mendell are going on to play golf at the collegiate level in the fall at Georgia Tech and LSU respectively. For now, Coach Mendell is “excited for this upcoming season”.

Boys Individual Champion, Kale Fontenot says the course at Beaver Creek “was pretty wide open so I was able to blast a driver down there, and make a few putts yesterday and a few today. It was nice to shoot under par both days. It’s always good to get red figures”.
