Daimler Internship Experience

Fall of 2018 was a memorable one for me as it started on a high note of being offered the Intern position at Daimler Trucks North America. In September, I started my internship at Daimler as a Market Research & Analytics Intern at their beautiful headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

 I have always been passionate about automobile, and my fascination with big vehicles and internal combustion engines along with my love for technology brought me to Daimler. This internship gave me a great exposure to technology, relationship building and thus enabled my holistic development.

 Daimler Trucks North America is the leading heavy-duty truck manufacturer in North America. It produces and markets commercial vehicles under the Freightliner, Western Star and Thomas Built Buses nameplates. Daimler Trucks North America is a Daimler company, which is world's leading commercial vehicle manufacturer.

Daimler has a very strong customer focus. All the products are designed by keeping customer at the center. This customer-first approach can be seen in the culture of the company which is all ears to listen to customer's voice for suggestions and improvements.

 My role at DTNA is all about analyzing customer feedback and relay the information to the stakeholders. As an Analyst Intern in the Market Research & Analytics team, I support the organization by gathering competitive intelligence from Big Data and relay the information to the teams who can act upon the it so that DTNA holds its competitive edge for different products. I built a Sentiment Analysis algorithm which helps in understanding what are the issues that customers of DTNA are facing and how can we improve the processes to eliminate these issues.

 I used tools like R, Alteryx, Tableau and Excel for building an automated Sentiment Analysis and Key Phrase Extraction workflow. Customer feedback, which is in text form, is the input to the workflow and output is the sentiment of customers towards various products and a word cloud of issues that are pointed out by the customers. This output is mostly consumed by Product Strategy teams as they use this information for designing the future products. Other teams like Sales, Warranty etc. also actively consume the output to reach out to customers to address their specific issues.

I am passionate about problem solving. Here at Daimler, we face challenging problems every day and I feel that with a strong focus on technology, DTNA is enabling me to solve these problems

 Daimler life is all about being at the forefront of innovation so that we can deliver the best products to our customers and enable them to do their jobs in a better way.

 Best part about working for Daimler is that you get to work with really smart and driven people who also are super supportive. I can literally walk up to anyone in the company and they would gladly lend an ear to listen to my problem and are more than willing to guide and mentor me.

 Time flies when you are having fun and I thank every individual who has contributed to my learning curve. My Daimler family has been extremely supportive and I have something to take home from every single team member.

 As an intern, I believe it is very important to take advantage of the resources provided to us within the organization, ask more questions and learn to follow instructions from our team while creating an impact and contributing our part. At this stage, I am confident that my experiences and skills would help me transition out of school to a work environment.
