A Day in the Life of a Data Center Operator

A Day in the Life of a Data Center Operator

Have you ever thought about what it’s like inside a data center? Or about the role they play in modern life?

Data centers aren’t necessarily a thing most people outside the tech industry think about daily, but behind the scenes, they play a big part in our everyday lives. Data centers house the infrastructure that powers a wide range of essential services, such as:

·         Online banking and payments

·         Retail supply chain management

·         Smartphone applications that help user order food or pull up a map

·         Communication tools and social media

·         Healthcare portals and emergency dispatch

Few people outside the tech industry ever step foot in a data center, nor do most understand what it’s like to work there. But at Equinix, data centers are our lifeblood, and we have teams working 24/7 to keep them operating. On this International Data Center Day, we wanted to provide a glimpse into what it’s like working inside a data center, so we interviewed two expert data center operators to learn more about their roles.

Mike Glenn, Lead IBX Customer Operations Technician

What does a typical day look like in your job?

My job involves handling customer requests and solving problems. This includes tasks like setting up connections between network carriers and customer equipment, replacing failed hard drives and installing equipment.

What’s the data center environment like?

The data center is always unpredictable. When you step onto the floor, you're greeted by the loud hum of servers and storage units, all generating heat as they work. Everywhere you look, there are trays of fiber and racks of cables, each carrying vital information in different directions. LED lights flash, catching your eye at every turn.

What’s the most exciting part of your job?

I love interacting with customers as I fulfill their requests. Many have fascinating stories about technology and the ever-changing IT environment. Whether I have a brief encounter or a longer interaction, I get a sense of satisfaction in meeting their needs and using my experience to guide them in the right direction.

What’s the human element of your profession?

The essence of my job lies in interaction, whether it's through requests, phone calls or meeting customers. It's about being helpful even when not explicitly asked. I assist wherever needed and serve customers even in passing encounters, striving to create a great experience in the world of data centers.

What would you want people outside the industry to understand about the role of data center operations in everyday life?

The role of a data center operator is crucial yet often overlooked. It's a position filled with responsibilities that many may not fully understand. Data center operators play a vital role in connecting cities, states and countries through various forms of connections. They ensure the smooth operation of existing networks and contribute to the transition from old to new technology. We’re ordinary people with extraordinary abilities.

Elhaam Bepary, Critical Facilities Engineer

What does a typical day look like in your job?

My department at Equinix plays a crucial role in ensuring the continuous and reliable operation of data center infrastructure, systems and components. I perform regular inspections, maintenance and testing of critical systems, including power distribution, HVAC, generators and uninterruptable power supply (UPS) systems. Every day holds new experiences, ranging from planned maintenance to trainings to fire drills to customer visits.

What’s the data center environment like?

Data center operations typically involve collaboration among various teams including engineers, systems administrators, facilities staff and security personnel. Effective communication and teamwork are essential for coordinating tasks and addressing issues efficiently since the environment can appear challenging.

What’s the most exciting part of your job?

I enjoy working on critical equipment activities, including switching, maintenance, installations and troubleshooting. They’re interesting because I get to learn a lot, and it keeps me on the go.

What’s the human element of your profession?

Being a Critical Facilities Engineer encompasses interpersonal skills, problem-solving abilities, adaptability, attention to detail, leadership qualities, customer focus and ethical conduct. These attributes complement technical expertise and contribute to the effective management and operation of data center facilities. We accompany our sales team on customer site visits to address their queries and concerns. We also organize field trips to help university students choose their ideal careers in a data center.

What would you want people outside the industry to understand about the role of data center operations in everyday life?

Imagine a data center as a big, secure building filled with lots of computers, servers and other physical equipment. It's like a giant brain that stores and processes information for organizations, hospitals and even the internet itself. They make it possible for us to browse webpages, complete online purchases and receive text messages after every transaction—seamlessly. Certified data center operators work 24x7x365 to keep these processes uninterrupted. We maintain critical systems and secure all data flawlessly to keep you on the go with your daily activities. A data center never sleeps!

At least Mike is doing a technician job and he is not an operator like somewhere else.

As an 11-year veteran (and former customer in the early 2000s) at Equinix, our ability to maintain consistent, operational excellence across 80 (and counting) global metros never ceases to amaze me. Continuous innovation (digital infrastructure, liquid cooling, etc.) and sustained growth into new markets while providing inherently secure and accommodating facilities, along with the world's largest interoperable, provider neutral ecosystem enables our unique capabilities in supporting the world's most challenging Public and Private Sector technology requirements. This would not be possible without the dedicated and highly skilled global operations teams who keep our lights on in our nearly 260 data centers around the world. Our global community of operations professionals make a seemingly impossible task at times almost look easy. Tremendous respect for all they do in making Equinix the uniquely differentiated Global Digital Marketplace that it has become over the last 25+ years.
