DialogueNEXT Shines Spotlight on Global Farmers

In celebration of World Population Day on July 11, leaders came together for conversations on food security in the face of a growing population for day 2 of the World Food Prize Foundation’s DialogueNEXT held in partnership with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). Engaging discussions tackled pressing topics such as climate change, rural resilience, agrifood system transformation and more, showcasing a true commitment to finding solutions to achieving a more well-nourished world.

This event was dedicated to honoring and amplifying the voices of farmers, who are the backbone of global food security. Central to day two’s program were the "Farmer Journey" sessions, which spotlight the experiences and insights of farmers from diverse regions. These stories highlighted the challenges they face and the innovative solutions they employ to overcome them. Thank you to Global Farmer Network for the continued support.

Day 2 of DialogueNEXT encouraged global representatives to evaluate the intersection between agriculture and climate change. Speakers highlighted inspiring international partnerships between countries and leading research institutions, united in their dedication to pioneering agricultural research and advocating for more sustainable practices.

We were honored to hear from descendants of remarkable historical figures who have left a profound impact on the modern world. Sara Boettiger, great-granddaughter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt; Jeanie Borlaug Laube, daughter of Dr. Norman E. Borlaug; and Marte R. Gomez, son of Marte R. Gomez, shared poignant memories and invaluable knowledge from their own experiences and those of their influential relatives. Their stories emphasized the enduring importance of developing farmer resilience in the face of global challenges. Guided by Gabriela Soto Laveaga, Professor at Harvard University, the session titled "The Legacy of Agricultural Changemakers" beautifully bridged the pioneering efforts to combat global hunger with today's agricultural innovations, inspiring a continued commitment to advancing the field.

Hon. Ted McKinney, CEO of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA), delivered compelling remarks on "the art of selling a vision.” He emphasized the importance of looking forward and backward, drawing lessons from past successes while innovating for the future. McKinney passionately advocated for taking these advancements directly to the farmers, ensuring that they are the primary beneficiaries of agricultural innovations. His insights underscored the necessity of effective communication and visionary leadership in transforming agrifood systems to secure global food security.

Beth Crawford delivered a compelling keynote on the collaborative efforts of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), CIMMYT and CGIAR in advancing food security through the VACS initiative. She emphasized that VACS is not just a project but a growing movement dedicated to ensuring access to nutritious food for all. By leveraging the strengths and expertise of these organizations, VACS aims to create sustainable solutions that address the pressing challenges of global food security.
