Do unto others...

"Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and you help them become what they are capable of being." – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

As I was reading material on leadership and teamwork, I stumbled across this quote a few months ago, and thought it was an excellent statement for both topics. That is, there are a lot of books, seminars, webinars, and even majors that teach on servant leadership, but I thought the above statement demonstrated a clear definition of intertwining leadership and team building. I believe the real challenge is in its execution.

When I reflect on my own thoughts, premature conclusions and the absence of knowing my colleagues’ abilities and full potential, I shrink from Von Goethe’s statement. In order to establish servant leadership, I must elevate the first word, “Treat” to the word “Trust”. In other words, treat or respect a colleague or leader, I must first trust their current skills and abilities. Therefore, I need to exemplify trust, respect and honor the team members and most of all expect the unexpected. As I work with others, servant leadership navigates the team’s current abilities and puts forward what they will be when all skills are in fruition.

Fortunately, I was blessed with a mentor who masterfully implemented this skill and modeled it for me. It’s in the implementation that many times I fall short. Yet, I try to keep a balanced perspective, but it is challenging in the workplace and marketplace. My encouragement rests at home as my wife and I are blessed with two children who demonstrate the will, desire and strength to pursue their dreams using their God-given talents and abilities. Watching them grow and challenge themselves to the next level, it has been a joy to witness. If you’re discouraged and unsure about your role and ability to be a servant leader, look around you with fresh eyes, you may be surprised by what you find.
