Happy National Coming Out Day

Across the globe, today we will recognise National Coming Out Day, an event to celebrate coming out and raise awareness of the LGBTQ+ community being able to live their lives openly. While not everyone’s experiences of coming out are positive ones, it is important to be proud of who you are and not allow anyone to force you to hide your true self.

Many people see National Coming Out Day as the perfect time to celebrate their own stories of coming out and raise awareness of the LGBTQ+ community. Coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community is a deeply personal and often life-altering process. When I came out in the West of Ireland at 17, I felt I had no option but to move to Dublin. This was a crucible moment for me and has shaped who I am today. In my time in Dublin, I have seen immense change. The introduction of equal marriage and the gender recognition bill in 2015 the icing on the cake of an Ireland that had already changed.
