How To Become a Project Manager?

Do you want to become a Project Manager?

I recently uploaded the video on my youtube channel which explains everything in detail but in this article, I wanted to summarize the video. I will tell you about the various skills needed and how you can build a strong portfolio to become a Project Manager. The following topics are covered in the video.

Types of Project Management

1) Traditional Project Management

  • They follow the principles of Project Management Institute i.e PMI
  • They have a standard set of rules such as INITIATING, PLANNING, EXECUTING, MONITORING, and CONTROLLING, CLOSING.

2) AGILE Project Management

  • Software industries have moved towards Agile Project Management and other industries will slowly move towards it.
  • In Agile Project Management there are a lot of frameworks and one of the most popular frameworks is called SCRUM and the designation is called SCRUM MASTER.

Which Project Management should you choose?

I highly recommend you to do both as I mentioned tech industry is moving towards Agile Project Management but there are a lot of other industries such as Manufacturing, Construction, Banking, etc follow the Traditional Project Management and they will eventually move towards Agile Project Management so that is why you need to learn both.

Learning both will not only help you to stand out but you can also help the companies which are following the Traditional Project Management shift to Agile Project Management.

Books that will help you to kick start your career.

  1. SCRUM: A breathtakingly brief and agile introduction by Chris Sims and Hillary Louise Johnson.
  2. THE ELEMENTS OF SCRUM by Chris Sims and Hillary Louise Johnson.
  3. PMBOK GUIDE by Project Management Institute. ( focuses on theoretical and technical knowledge )
  4. PMP EXAM PREP by Rita Mulcahy. (certification)

Certification and Online Courses.

  1. PMP Certification
  2. CAPM Certification (Certified Associate in Project Management) (Note:- To get certified you need to take online classes and I highly recommend you take the CAPM exam prep course by Udemy.)
  3. CSM (Certified Scrum Master)
  4. PSM (Professional Scrum Master Certification )

How to build Project Management Experience

1) Be a part of the university club.

- Project Manager's main job is to get the job done so you need to inculcate leadership qualities and lead the team by organizing events at your university. -So, when I joined the university I became the President for the Indian Student Club and yoga and meditation club.

- I hosted various events at the university which helped me to build good connections and was also able to manage the events by working with a team. - - The main skills that I improved while organizing the events were

-Communication skills

-Negotiation skills

-People skills

-Presentation skills

-Execution skills

2) Start your club.

You can also start your club and connect with people who have similar interests, it could be a music club, entrepreneurship club, dance club, singing club, etc.

3) Be a part of the local startups.

Another opportunity for you is to be part of the local startups, you can share your ideas and implement them and see if it works or not. By doing this you get an experience of how the company functions.

4) Be a part of an NGO.

You can also be a part of an NGO, reach out to them and help them to organize various events.

5) Help your professors to complete a project.

Reach out to your professors, it could be an MBA or Project Management Department or any other department. Your professors will be a part of various projects where you can help them and gain experience.

6) Apply for On-Campus Jobs.

You can also apply for On-Campus Jobs where you could be a student professional, student coordinator, or student paraprofessionals where the skills would be mentioned as Communication, Public speaking, and Leadership so you could apply for the campus jobs.

I would like to mention that you need to create your own experience and try to stand out from the rest.

I highly recommend you to watch the video, make notes and start preparing for your future. Go check out the full video on YouTube and go through the description box for the certification and course links related to Project Management.

Your feedback will help me to improve my work and give my best in every video.
