How can I Network as a Developer to build connections and get a job in tech?

I get this question almost daily. Here is how I do it and the exact same way I have built up my network and REAL GENUINE CONNECTIONS!

First thing I do, LinkedIn. (Shocker I know) Let's say I want to connect with Other Developers or maybe even hiring managers. Look at their profile. Do you have common interests? What jumps out about them? Why do you even want to connect with this person?Answer those questions.

Once you know why you want to connect, send a request but add a note. This way if they accept, your note will always be in their inbox. You don't just fall into the number of connections.

I was asked this question. Instead of just answering it, I decided to turn it into a live demo. I went to their profile and saw that Catalin was a volunteer coordinator. I LOVE volunteering. Not only that, they coordinated efforts and events.

Not only have I done that and still do this, I genuinely love talking about it and possibly learning different strategies. So my reply had the goal of creating a connection through mutual interest, showing value since I have some in this area and really showing what I can bring to the table, while also having an active interest in their effort.

I didn't lead with "I need a job! what do you got?" Which instantly made him want to reply, engage, and share their experience as well.

If Catalin was a developer in my area, this conversation could lead to an awesome relationship! Maybe he doesn't have a job for me today, that's ok. Maybe in 6 months, or a year, or maybe even in two years he will. The overall idea being, If I build up a strong network, I will NEVER run out of opportunities because it will always be producing them for me. Catalin may know others and refer me. You never know where one conversation can take you.

Don't copy and paste or be generic.

BE REAL or be really forgotten.

Wow! I didn’t think about using posting my volunteer work nor using it to create! Thanks for the tips!
