How I Navigate the Changing Landscape of Remote Work in 2023

I'm in trouble.

In 2021, I took a significant risk by centering my life around remote work. However, as we enter 2023, it's becoming increasingly apparent that the option to work from home is dwindling in this post-pandemic slump. The "new normal" is losing its flexibility and reverting to pre-pandemic practices like a stretched rubber band snapping back into place.

Despite this, I am pleased to report that after spending seven months in Florida as a snowbird, I am experiencing a semblance of normalcy as someone who has fully embraced the work-from-anywhere way of life; working from home was a welcomed change of pace following a year of the road in 2022.

However, we must acknowledge that remote work is a privilege that not everyone can access. According to a National Bureau of Economic Research survey, only 37% of U.S. jobs can be done remotely.

As the call to return to the office gains momentum, it's becoming increasingly clear that working from home is a perk that fewer and fewer of us can enjoy.

Don't get me wrong; there are some advantages to returning to the office.

  • For one, face-to-face interactions can help build stronger relationships with colleagues and improve collaboration.
  • Being in a shared workspace can also foster a sense of community and belonging, which can be challenging to achieve when working remotely.

That being said, I still champion the work-from-anywhere lifestyle. It's essential to recognize that the future of work is evolving, and many companies are finding ways to embrace both remote and in-person work.

Ultimately, finding the right balance between remote and in-person work is the key to success. By leveraging both advantages, we can create a more productive, fulfilling, and balanced work experience for all.

Releveling expectations is crucial to managing a healthy work-life balance in today's workplace. However, it's not a one-time event but rather an ongoing process.

Ultimately, the future of work is about creating a more equitable and inclusive workplace for everyone, regardless of their industry or circumstances. By embracing the benefits of remote work and recognizing its limitations, we can work towards a more productive, fulfilling, and balanced work experience for all.

  • Communication is vital: Clear and open communication with colleagues and supervisors is essential for success in the workplace. This may include actively listening, asking questions, and providing feedback in a constructive and respectful manner. For example, scheduling regular check-ins with coworkers or setting up a communication protocol for remote teams can help ensure everyone is on the same page.

My favorite Slack status is 'going for a walk.' It allows me to clear my mind and return with renewed focus.
  • Prioritize mental and emotional well-being: The post-pandemic economic downturn has brought unprecedented levels of stress and uncertainty into our lives. It's essential to prioritize our mental and emotional well-being both on and off the job. This may include taking breaks throughout the day to recharge, connecting with friends and family, or seeking professional support when needed. For example, some companies offer mental health resources or encourage employees to take mental health days.
  • Embrace the benefits of remote work: The work-from-anywhere lifestyle can bring many benefits beyond just flexibility and convenience by embracing remote work to improve our overall quality of life. For example, remote work can allow for a more flexible schedule that can be adjusted to fit personal needs or preferences.

Remember, as we navigate this new work landscape, it's essential to prioritize our well-being, communicate effectively, and embrace the benefits of remote work. Doing so can create a more productive, fulfilling, and balanced work experience for all.

At the end of the day, if you put in an honest day's work, you'll end up with an honest lifestyle.

People should be given the freedom to work in a way that is best for them and their teams. Employers should care about results/outcome. Employees should be given the autonomy and resources to determine the path to the results/outcome.
