How to Overcome Leadership Challenges

How to Overcome Leadership Challenges

Being a leader isn't easy. You can stumble over common pitfalls if you aren't ready for them. Here are the ones leaders run into most often, and how to keep them from taking you down.

“It’s Not My Fault”

As a leader, your actions and attitude are always being observed by your team. If you’re unorganized, inconsistent, bull-headed, or unreasonable, they're going to believe that’s the behavior they should model.

Do this instead: Portray confidence, experience, and a sense of calm. Be the leader you would want to guide you, even if you feel completely different on the inside. You’ll instill a feeling of trust and strength in your team by maintaining your professionalism.

"But, My Team Loves Me”

Leaders are people too, and some of them yearn to be one of the crowd. A peer-type relationship might result in lack of respect and accountability. These can derail productivity.

Do this instead: Just like with parenting, your job is not to be their friend. They need to respect you as their leader. While it’s acceptable to be friendly, sincere, empathetic and caring, there must be a line that leaders don’t cross with employees – even if that means being left out sometimes. It is more critical to be respected by your team than to be loved by them.

“I Can’t Take the Pressure”

In an industry like lending, there are dramatic ups and downs. The goals, however, never let up. These highs and lows can cause you to be overly emotional and inconsistent with your team. And, if the leader does that, so will they.

Do this instead: Focus on your processes and finite figures that show success or lack of it. Communicate in an even-keeled manner, and ride the rough spots as calmly as possible. Remember that freaking out, yelling, and being emotional does more long-term harm than good.

“There’s Too Much Change”

If change bothers you, being a leader is going to be difficult. Regulations, management, goals, technology, and staff are just a few things that can cause chaos as they evolve. Keeping up can get overwhelming.

Do this instead: Learn to accept change even if you don’t welcome it. Watch for signs of change and proactively plan how to handle it. And always communicate changes to your team so they can prepare.

Being a successful leader means tackling obstacles and learning from your mistakes. Doing this empowers you to grow and improve as a leader so you can make a positive impact on your organization.
