How to Profit from Change-Induced Startup Momentum

Change is often the impetus to re-imagine, rethink and refresh our assumptions, our goals and our dreams. So, how can you get and keep the momentum rolling in the midst of change? We talked with several space and satellite startup leaders to get insights on how they look to create momentum in their ventures and keep going even when things change.

Find Reasons to Continue Forward

Vera Mulyani CEO Founder Mars City Design Marschitecture

“It’s scary to take something that is in your imagination, a vision, and try to turn that into something tangible,” says Vera Mulyani. “What I’ve realized in this process is that it is easy to find reasons not to continue forward, particularly in the early stages. If you can overcome the early obstacles, things begin to click and come together. Time and persistence take care of many roadblocks,” comments Vera with Mars City Design®. Plan for More than Your Share of Good Luck

“The more options you have the more chances for success. If you don’t have a plan for your business, someone else will come up with one, and you probably won’t like it. Bringing edge computing to space isn’t easy. There are a lot of moving pieces and an entire ecosystem of partners you need to rely on. Without a plan, it would be impossible to make this happen.” says Rick Ward with OrbitsEdge. “When you have that window of opportunity called a crisis, move as quickly as you can, get as much done as you can. There’s a momentum for change that’s very compelling.” – Anne M. Mulcahy

Get to Cash Faster

“The most important thing is to have milestones…to get to cash faster. Space startups need to push commercialization earlier in their development. The more they think like business people, the more success they will have. Here’s the thing, traditional VCs are not ready for space yet. Although space companies need a lot of money to launch, there isn’t enough money coming into the industry yet. We are seeking to fill that gap with other space industry enthusiasts,” concludes Brant Arseneau with Spaced Ventures. “You simply cannot anticipate everything. This is especially true when you are doing work that happens 300 to 20,000 miles from Earth, in an environment that doesn’t follow the rules of gravity,” says Daniel Faber with Orbit Fab. “We are pushing boundaries. We are doing things that have never been done before. One of the biggest challenges I have faced in my career was while at a previous company. We wanted to buy a satellite, but when it was launched, the rocket had a small glitch and it ended up not having enough fuel to get into its designated orbit. This was not only a lesson in working in space, it also became the impetus for creating Orbit Fab. Had there been a way to refuel that satellite, it would not have represented a huge loss,” shares Daniel. Keep building, keep going, don’t stop – The momentum you seek is just around the corner!

Thanks for this insightful article. Being one of those founders, I can't agree more when it comes to milestones and commercialization. Our philosophy is, "monetize anything that can, as soon as it can" because cash flow is literally the blood of a business.
