The Importance of Personal Branding for Creatives

I know sooooo many talented creatives who don't get the recognition they deserve *cry*. And, spoiler alert, it's not because they're not good enough.

It's because the world doesn't know about them.

Solution? A personal brand that sets you apart from the competition. With so many people vying for attention online, having a strong personal brand can be the difference between success and invisibility. I wanna talk about the importance of personal branding for creatives who are trying to earn money doing what they love 👇

Credibility and Trust

Heard of the 'Mere Exposure Effect'? Simply put, it's a psychological bias towards people who repeatedly 'show up.' You know how you feel like you know celebrities, even though you've never actually met them? It's because they're always top of mind. One of the main benefits of building a personal brand is that it helps establish this credibility and trust with potential clients or customers. By consistently posting your content, work updates, vision and ideas, you can show that you are passionate and dedicated to your craft and... HUMAN. Soon enough, you'll be someone they want to reach out to and connect with.

Standing Out

Another advantage of personal branding is that it can help you stand out in a crowded market. I can tell you as someone who commissions creatives from within a brand... I often feel CHOICE PARALYSIS. With so many creatives competing for attention, it's important to find a way to differentiate yourself. But you really don't need to look far. YOU are your USP.

Creating a Consistent Vision

Finally, personal branding can help create a consistent vision for clients. By establishing a clear brand identity, you can ensure that your clients know what to expect when they work with you. This can include everything from the types of projects you specialise in to your communication style and work process. By creating a consistent vision, you can start attracting work, rather than chasing it.

Let's wrap up

Have I convinced you yet?! Personal branding is THE thing for creatives who want to earn money doing what they love. By establishing credibility and trust, standing out in a crowded market, and creating a consistent vision for clients, you can genuinely succeed in your creative career. So if you haven't already, start thinking about how you can develop your personal brand and take your creative career to the next level.

Great article Jo! It's so important for creatives to put some effort into personal branding. I've build a strong personal brand around my fashion illustration business and it has really helped with attracting and keeping clients. Not just any clients, but the ones that I want and that are a great fit with my illustrations.
