Leadership in the Arts

We sat down with one of MCB's most generous donors, President of the philanthropic Ford Foundation Darren Walker, to learn from his journey and how he uses his experience to impart change. We look forward to honoring Mr. Walker and his immense contributions at our 38th Anniversary Gala tomorrow evening and presenting him with MCB's Leadership in the Arts Award.

Much of the work you (and the Ford Foundation) do is centered around inequality. For individuals, the topic of inequality can seem daunting and insignificant – there’s so much work to do, where do we start? If there was one thing you could tell them to focus their attention on, what would it be?

It's often those who are closest to the problem who can find pathways toward lasting solutions, which is why the Ford Foundation supports leaders all over the world working to achieve better outcomes in their communities. By recognizing inequity where we see it and advocating for comprehensive solutions in our own lives, we can create a more inclusive and equitable future for all.

You are often described as the “ultimate connector”. How does connecting, building relationships and cross-organization collaboration help build our communities?

We can't lose sight of the fact that the root causes of inequality cannot be addressed in a vacuum. We need to work in lockstep with one another to build bridges and find lasting solutions to the complex web of problems that loom large in our society.  By forging relationships across sectors and sharing resources and expertise, we can leverage our collective power to exact lasting, meaningful change.

What excites you most about the work being done at Miami City Ballet with the support of the Ford Foundation?

Miami has a rich, diverse and exciting flavor all its own, and the Miami City Ballet is raising the bar by opening doors to new audiences and bringing talented artists to the forefront in a fresh and exciting way.
