Medha Samant

Regional Director of Investment Management - Equities

1.    Tell us about yourself.

I'm from Mumbai, India, and am now based in Hong Kong. I head up Equities in AIA's Group Investment team. In my free time, I enjoy reading, practicing yoga, hiking, oil painting, and visiting museums.

2.    What initially drew you to your current field?

When I finished my MBA, the Indian economy was going through a period of economic liberalisation, which opened-up exciting new opportunities in Finance. It sparked my curiosity and introduced me to innovative approaches to business within an emerging market.

3.    What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced in your career and how did you overcome them?

Working in investment management, you have to deal with the constant volatility of the markets. So much can change on a day-to-day basis which can be very stressful. I worked through the Asian Financial Crisis and the Global Financial Crisis, which really put my resilience to the test as my job security was always at risk.

Living in Hong Kong has given me the right blend of city life and nature so I can practice yoga and hike which helps me unwind. I also started painting again after many years which has been a wonderful way for me to recover my energy when I most need it.

4.    Any milestones or achievements, big or small, you’re particularly proud of?

Personally, I found it tricky when I became a mother for the first time.  My firstborn was premature, and I was trying to juggle the demands of being a new parent and work. What helped me get through it, were the networks and friendships I had built over the years that gave me the support I needed to find balance mentally and physically. As my children got older, they gave me perspective on the importance of downtime. I was able to find balance between work and family, and they taught me how to be more patient and empathic in all my relationships.

One of my biggest achievements professionally, was when I took a break from active portfolio management, and I joined Harvard Business School as a researcher. One of my first research studies was on BYD, the Chinese electronic vehicle manufacturer before it listed on the public market and Warren Buffet took a stake in it.

5.    What does being a leader mean to you? Or what are the qualities of a leader?

I am deeply inspired by my colleagues and their resilience during the toughest situations.  Being surrounded by that kind of strength at work gives me the support I need to continue to grow as a leader.  I always remind myself to channel the same passion I had in my younger years and to stay focussed, humble, and committed. A true leader above anything else needs to be a team player and walk the talk.

6.    If you could create a "dream programme" for young women entering your field, what would it include?

We need young women in Investment to drive innovation and change. My dream programme would equip young women with the tools they need to succeed and instil a belief in them that they belong in Investment. My programme would include a blend of rigorous skill development and mentorship, and a strong emphasis on building resilience and leadership skills.

When I reflect on my own journey, I realise that I didn’t have access to a support system that was truly integrated, and I wish I had – especially when I was just starting out. It would have accelerated my learning and confidence.

7.    Is there a message would you like to share to inspire inclusion?

When it comes to all aspects of gender equality, always reflect on how you can promote and measure progress.  As the saying goes, life is a marathon (or a hike), but not a sprint. If you remain honest with yourself in each phase of your life, the trail ahead gets easier to navigate.

Never stop learning from others and try to look at things from their perspective.
