Sherry Lu

Regional Business Development Director, Regional CE Office

1.    Tell us about yourself

I am a Regional Business Development Director, overseeing business development in Mainland China. My journey with AIA began in 2000 in the Group Actuarial Department, and since then, I've held diverse roles, including, Group Chief Valuation Actuary and Director of Research & Development for Greater China. I am originally from Mainland China and left to pursue my Actuarial studies in Canada before I settled in Hong Kong.

2.    What do you enjoy about your work?

AIA has been my professional home for most of my career, and I am grateful for the numerous opportunities for personal and professional development . The diverse and challenging roles that I've embraced have made my days stimulating and dynamic. It is fulfilling and rewarding to witness the positive impact of our collective efforts. What truly sets AIA apart is our people and the pervasive culture of respect and support that defines the organisation. Collaborating with inspirational leaders and colleagues who inspire, guide, support, and impart new knowledge has been an immense privilege. Their influence has been instrumental in shaping the individual I am today.

3.    What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career and how did you overcome them?

When I first became a mother to twins, it was a real test to find the right balance between my career and motherhood. I was constantly juggling different responsibilities and deciding where to invest my time. However, seeing my family thrive alongside my career has made it all worthwhile. It's been a journey of challenges and sacrifices, but the joy of seeing my kids grow and succeed while pursuing my professional goals has been immensely rewarding.

4.    Any milestones or achievements, big or small, you’re particularly proud of?

A significant milestone that resonates deeply with me is being a key member in leading the successful conversion of AIA China into the first foreign wholly-owned life insurance subsidiary in Mainland China. The project required us to navigate the complexities of the regulatory landscape, manage large-scale operations, and work on extremely tight timelines. We got through it by working as a team and approaching each day with unwavering dedication and passion. This achievement stands as a pivotal moment in AIA China’s expansion journey, and is a highlight of my career.

5.    If you could create a ‘dream programme’ for young women entering your field, what would it include?

If I were to create a 'dream programme' for young women, I would envision a programme that offers tailored learning, rotational opportunities across various business functions, mentorship from and to female leaders, and platforms for networking and professional development. My programme would aim to provide young women the necessary resources and support to build the confidence to excel in their careers.
