My summer '23 internship experience at Peterbilt

My summer '23 internship experience at Peterbilt

As the sun set on my first day at Peterbilt Motors Company, I knew I was embarking on a 12-week adventure that would shape my future as a supply chain professional. As a Supply Chain Analyst intern for North America Materials PACCAR, I had the incredible opportunity to work with the Materials Systems team to optimize the supply chain and ensure smooth production for both Peterbilt and Kenworth Truck Co. trucks. It was an experience that not only strengthened my skills but also provided invaluable insights into the world of supply chain management.

My primary tools during the internship included MS Excel, MS SQL, Tableau, and Power BI. Armed with these powerful tools, I dove into data analysis and visualization to capture crucial parts requirements. Working closely with the team, I investigated supplier performance, identified parts shortages, and analyzed missing receipts of parts. These efforts allowed us to identify potential bottlenecks and take proactive measures to prevent disruptions in the supply chain.

One of the most exciting aspects of my internship was documenting internal websites used by the Materials team. This task gave me a comprehensive understanding of the company's processes, enabling me to align my analyses with the organization's overarching goals. I learned to bridge the gap between theory and practice, witnessing how my academic knowledge directly contributed to Peterbilt's success.

Collaboration was at the heart of my internship. I worked alongside diverse teams, including buyers, planners, material coordinators, and forecast analysts. Interacting with professionals from various backgrounds provided me with a holistic view of the supply chain's complexities. It was inspiring to see how each team member's expertise harmoniously contributed to the overall efficiency of the supply chain.

As I reflect on my summer internship, I cannot help but express my gratitude to my alma mater, the Naveen Jindal School of Management, UT Dallas. Their exceptional UT Dallas MS Supply Chain Management program laid the foundation for my success. The program's focus on practical learning and real-world applications prepared me to excel in the dynamic environment of Peterbilt.

A special word of appreciation goes to my professors and, in particular, my program director, John Fierst. Their unwavering support and guidance were instrumental in my journey. Mr. Fierst, in particular, was an exceptional mentor, always encouraging us to embrace challenges and pursue excellence.

This internship at Peterbilt has been more than just a professional experience; it has been a personal transformation. It has reaffirmed my passion for supply chain management and ignited a determination to make a meaningful impact in this field. The insights I gained, the skills I honed, and the friendships I forged will forever hold a special place in my heart.

As my internship draws to a close, I leave Peterbilt with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. I am excited about the future, knowing that the knowledge and experiences I gained here will propel me forward in my career. My summer at Peterbilt has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I am eager to embrace the challenges that lie ahead, armed with the lessons of this life-changing journey.
