Politics, Trust & Survival

The more politics I do, the more I realise how we've ended up with such an absence of trust. The blatant hypocrisy just screams out in headlines like today's; from a government that's done little or worse to ensure the environment is protected:

"Theresa May commits to net zero UK carbon emissions by 2050"

It's hard to imagine anyone could believe this to be a commitment based on actual concern about preserving the future of life on this planet. This is about politics, not about the climate emergency.

If the Conservative Party truly cared about the environment, what's taken them so long to do anything of note? Why are they still advancing fracking? Where is the tangible support for renewables? Why another runway?

This government has been taken to Europe’s highest court three times over air pollution, and lost each time and it was only last week that Chancellor, Philip Hammond wrote to warn AGAINST adopting the strict targets on greenhouse gas emissions and questioned:

"..whether or not it makes economic sense to save the planet?"

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change convened by the UN, made clear that we must: "...drastically reduce our emissions in the next decade to avoid a catastrophic situation in which droughts, floods, heatwaves and extreme weather across the globe devastate lives, destroy agriculture, lay waste to wildlife and force millions to flee."

The Conservative government is not working on this problem - they are working on Party popularity and legacy issues. We deserve better.

Despite the failures of the UK government, there is hope and wisdom to be found across the world in the #GreenWave; here in Europe, our power has increased and we intend to use it.
