The Power of Positive Influence

The Power of Positive Influence

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with best-selling author, Lisa Ruhurek, who is passionate about inspiring others to be the drivers of positive influence. After a career in hospitality and a roller coaster ride of personal development, Lisa started her own company and wrote her book, Dare to Be Influential.

Everyone should start with the premise that anyone can be influential. It’s not about being a social media influencer, where there is a multitude of negativity these days. Instead, it’s about your own sphere of influence.

According to Lisa, being influential is the way you treat people, the way you speak to people, the kindness you show people. It’s not just one thing.

Plus, if you want to have influence it helps to have moxie. Lisa said, “Moxie is the intersection between confidence and courage.”

Bottom line? You must have confidence and trust in yourself. In my experience coaching women, it is rarely if ever about their competence. While competence is important, it’s important to remember that it is the confidence and courage to take action that is most crucial.

When asked if she could give only one piece of advice, what would it be? Lisa said, “Get in touch with what is most important to you. Make a list of those five or six things. These are your core values. Live and breathe them. They will help you with everything that you do.”

Here are some other tips that I gleaned from my conversation with Lisa.

1.     Get to know yourself. When you know yourself, everything else falls into place.

2.     Choose positivity over negativity. When given the choice, bring others up. Don’t let them bring you down.

3.     Screw expectations. Don’t worry about what others expect of you. Be who you are and follow your own path.

4.     Kick ‘yes’ people to the curb. Surround yourself with people who will tell you the truth and challenge you so you can stretch and grow.

5.     Share the stage. Use your platform to lift others up, especially those who might not have the same access you do.

6.     Relish the bumps in the road. Self-discovery is found in the hiccups along the way.

7.     Manage your emotions. How you react and treat others is important. Remember, people are watching.
