Public speaking hints...

I think of myself as a good public speaker.  Then I read this little article at Forbes.com and realize that maybe I'm not as good as I would like to think I am.  I am comfortable standing in front of a group and speaking but I, like most of us, can improve.  The article has 5 tips:

  1. Know the power of silence
  2. Eliminate bad filler words "Uhm" and "Uhh"
  3. Jargon usage - don't do it!
  4. Cursing - don't do it either!
  5. Be succinct

These are well known things that I have ignored from time to time but as I have moved on in my career I find myself speaking more frequently to larger groups and to groups of people that don't "know" me.  This means my informal style is not as effective a means of communication.

There are MANY other tips and things you can/should do to enhance your public speaking these are just a couple things that can help within your company or with clients.

Always good to hone your public speaking skills. Practice is the best along with some good, constructive guidance along the way. I highly recommend Toastmasters International as an avenue to help one improve their public speaking. Talk about the cheapest, most valuable professional development there is!

The best public speakers will continually seek ways to improve. I'm a student at heart ... and absolutely love delivering speeches that inspire, inform, and motivate audiences.
