I agree that a card is a set of credentials, but I don't agree NFC leads to cards becoming obsolete. A card requires no battery, unlike a phone. Similarly a card is only used for one thing, unlike a phone, making a cyber attack on a card more difficult. I can see a change of form factor in time and other changes but a single-use piece of plastic has a future for now.
